17-Year-Old Aspie Wants to Get Out of Group Home
Hello, my name is Dalton and I live in a group home in Oregon City. I am quite frankly at the end of my rope. My parents "kicked me out" and put me into the foster care system because I was being a handful to them and they didn't have the patience to parent me.
After being in 3 different group homes (all of which I hated) I came to this house in Oregon City where I currently have my Internet rights taken away (I'm on the Internet because I snuck into the office and turned on the WiFi), The reason why I have no Internet privileges is because I was looking at porn and my parents and psychiatrist assumed that I have an "addiction" (I DON'T). It was even the LEGAL kind!
Now I hear that my parents will still be my legal guardians even after I turn 18 because I have a disability.
I feel insulted because I live in a house full of moderately ret*d people and one guy who worked here said during an argument that I'm just like them (What an ignorant douche.).
All in all, I am pissed and I deserve better than this. How the hell do I get out of this situation?
I know I haven't said everything. I am open to questions and will answer them the best I can.
But right now I am very confused and frustrated that no one involved with me seems to understand.
Thats... not really true. If the courts believe you cannot take care of yourself or ever reach that point, then yea, they could let you parents keep custody. Otherwise, you're free as a bird come your 18th BDay.
According to the court system, you must be able to seek work, maintain a steady income large enough to support yourself, and you must have no psychiatric disability to preclude the first point. Now, at 17, it's not going to be worth the bother, but you could always try to be emancipated. You must have some sort of plan though how you will support yourself. You can either get a job, which right now isn't the easiest, or you could go to college on scholarship. Enlisting in the military would be a third option, but if you have an official DX, you caint do that.
If you're less than six months from your 18th birthday, just wait it out. Emancipation is a court process, usually requiring home visits and proof of long term income. You won't have that.
1. Guardianship of the Person: The guardian of the person is appointed by the court to manage the personal affairs of an individual who is mentally ret*d or developmentally disabled and provide assistance in making decisions concerning his or her care. Although the guardianship statute does not specifically enumerate powers and duties of the guardian of the person, the powers are at least as broad as those of parents who act for minor children, including authority necessary to make personal decisions for them on their behalf and in their best interest, such as securing good health care, appropriate housing, day programs, and recreational services.
A guardian is not responsible for the acts or financial obligations of the person who is mentally ret*d or developmentally disabled.
2. Guardian of the Property: The guardian of the property, under the supervision of the court, is responsible for the management of any and all financial resources of the person who is mentally ret*d or developmentally disabled with the exception of the representative payee funds such as Social Security. The property guardian is charged with protecting and preserving the individual’s property, and permission must first be obtained from the court before any funds can be invested or spent on behalf of the person who is disabled.
The guardian of the property is required to provide an accounting or detailed report of all financial transactions to the court, including the management and expenditures of the person’s money.
Now, bear in mind these are for New York state, however, the statutes and laws will be nearly identical everywhere in the US. So long as you can maintain your own person, you are allowed to do so.
Hope this helps you Dalton.
EDIT: I checked your birthday on profile... if that's correct, you'd be better off just waiting. You're actually getting quite close to a BDay now. The last months are the hardest, since you know that soon you'll be free, but you're smart. You'll do fine.

I'm sorry your in this situation. your parents sound like abusive A**HOLES! There is nothing wrong with looking at porn. and they are telling you you have an addiction because the thought of you watching it make them feel awkward. thats there problem not yours!. Your not legally allowed to watch it till your 18. so to stay out of trouble you may want to wait a year.
I'm not saying you have an addiction cause i don't think you do. I'm just saying in the USA your not allowed by law to visit any sites with that content until your 18.
I'm sorry your in a group home. that must be terrible for you. I have heard from other members here that those places treat the residents like a person who has no rights .
They take away your freedoms your rights and tell you your rights are privileges. and that is abuse. and I'm sorry your stuck there.
Just so you know they can track internet history. So be careful.
I wish you all the best hope your life gets better.
Your parents sound like the scum of the earth. You deserve better then that.
For private internet use, use this. It downloads in seconds, works like a normal browser, then dissappears, deleting itself, taking your history with it, the moment you close it:
