Is this a tragic rule of thumb? Will I have to finally give in and become what I hate? :(

No, just for now.

I meant, is it possible for a nice guy to succeed?

Sure. There is no standing rule saying they cannot.

What kind of success do you have in mind?

Well, I pray to come upon a line of work where 1. I feel competent, and 2. support myself with. I'm already 28, and I've never had a very high paying job (nothing over 12 bucks an hour.) and I can't think of what I want to do with my English degree. I was hoping I'd know by graduation, but I'm still floating around.

That's indecision, not niceness.

When I was 28, I made about the same as you do, except I had to support a family, my wife's salary helped a little but I was the main bread winner. 28 is still young, I didn't feel comfortable with my salary until very recently and I'm 44 years old. I have no college degree, so you've got one over on me. With this economy, it might take a while for hiring to pick back up.

Nice people don't finish last, they run in a very different race. You might need to define success differently than the big house with two cars and a pool. Are you happy? Healthy? Do people love you? Are you helpful to those in need? Those are the things that also define success.

Our family's local church has a youth activities director. While this is a paid position, it doesn't pay much. I don't know the details but probably not much more than $20-30,000 annualy.

However, this low salary does not stop our director from being the best doggone youth minister I've ever seen. She makes my 12 year old AS son feel right at home with the other teens. Because it is a church setting the teens welcome him, something they may not always do out in the secular world. He feels like he belongs. Our youth director doesn't do it for the money, she does it because she is called.

There is so much debate over what constitutes a "nice guy" that I just dismiss the whole concept.

no I happen to be in a ver loving relationship with a very nice guy he's studying to be a doctor he's a perfect gentalmen and he always wants to stick up for me, he wants to be the supporter of the family but he still treats me like an equal and when he talks to me he makes me feel like the most beautiful woman in the world.

The whole 'nice guys finish last' thing is so 90's girls don't want bad guys because in reality a bad guy isn't practicle or safe and as much as the thrill of danger is attractive a girl dosen't settle down and marry the bad guy she may date him for a while yeah but you can't build a life with a bad guy

at least that my opinion.
