I don't even know how to explain what's wrong with this guy. I'll send him an e-mail (which is what he'll tell me to do, he'll tell me "E-mail me tonight with the information") and then months will go by with no response from him. We don't see each other very often because of my severe dislike for him and because I don't really need to. But, lack of response to things like e-mails and phonecalls (I left a message with his secretary last week and still haven't received a response) are just part of my overall... I don't even know what to call them I'm so frustrated.

He'll deflect questions I have with personal anecdotes. When I asked him a question about a symptom and what to do about it, he told a five minute story about his niece. What the hell am I supposed to take from that?

I want to fire him, but I need a referral to someone else and I don't know how to get a referral while firing him at the same time. My situation is very complex. It's not just autism. There are a lot of other things going on, too. But, I can't talk to him about this because he just plain won't talk.

I don't know what kind of therapist he is, but I had a VERY frustrating experience with one whom I later found out to be a Freudian.

I later met an excellent psychotherapist who advised me that for my needs I should avoid Freudians, as I would not get the straight answers I was looking for from them.

From the sounds of things, the feeling may be mutual, so I don't see any harm in saying somthing along the lines of "hi, I don't think we're really seeing eye to eye on a lot of things. Would it be possible for you to refer me to another specialist?". By law, I think he has to comply with your request.

How in the world do you decide to be a therapist and then NOT communicate with your patients? There's something so counter-intuitive to that logic that I cannot even comprehend it.

I'd be hitting the phone book and finding a new therapist myself. Call their office, see if you caint just meet the person for maybe a minute or two, get a feel of how they run their practice. Then go back to your current one and ask for a referral to one of the ones you liked.

Ask him to refer you to someone else or (depending on where you go to see him) ask someone else in his department about getting referred to someone else. If you know of another therapist who works at the same place he does I'd start with asking for them if you think you'll like them.

I've asked for references and he's just not said anything.
