Ok, so, i am very upset and angry (and i know i shouldn't be letting a rude stranger get to me... i mean who cares; it probably has nothing to do with me personally, right?) but when i met this woman in a clothing boutique i went shopping in today, i felt like i was being re-introduced to all of those honest haughty intellectuals who have ridiculed me and exploited me for my naivete in the past.
i walked into the store and she was busy with customers, so i started looking at clothing and when the customers left, she said "hello" and i nervously kind of creaked "hello" back. and said nothing else. >.< then i picked something out to try on and she showed me to a dressing room. she didn't start to seem mean at all until after i was done. she took what i didn't want and i walked up to the counter with the shirt i was going to buy. when i was paying for it i mused about how i wanted to paint a cool design on it and she just laughed "fnarrrrr" (this really unattractive sarcastic sounding laugh) and when i was getting money out, i took too long so i apologized and said "ah, sorry, i'm disorganized haha" and she did the "fnarrrr" laugh again. then she told me to have a good day and i said "thanks, you too" and she said "thanks, i willlll." in a really sarcastic way.
i can tell she isn't just anxious herself, i knew she thought i was stupid and not the kind of customer who deserves to shop in her store. a lot of people think i'm stupid because i speak slowly, i have poor social skills, and i have a 'vacant' expression most of the time.
anyway...yeah. ramble ramble.....

Ugh, that's terrible. I had something similar happen a month or so ago. One of those moments where you can't at all figure out what was so weird or odd for the person to feel so justified in being a jerk. (and not that I think they really are justified -- it's just hard trying to imagine what's going on in their mind, to be like that to another human being)

In my imagination, after the fact, I stop at the point where I'm handing over my money, and say "you know what, I don't want it," and leave. If only I were so quick and swave in real life...

But anyway, yeah, that really stinks.

I HATE when store people are mean without cause!! !! !

I went shopping the other day and asked for a fitting room for the second time, and the sales lady said to me, "But I gave you a fitting room," and I just asked her, politely, if it was OK with her if I tried some different clothes on this time. I should write the store manager a letter, but I haven't been that industrious.

I listened to an assertiveness audiobook recently, and it gave a couple of ways to deflect a situation with this. I hope I get a rude saleslady soon so I can try it.

The two techniques:
1) Asking, "excuse me" in a very polite, questioning tone. You can't have any attitude behind it. This should hold the person accountable.

2) Asking or stating something completely nonsensical. An example might be, "that's a nice plant," or, "what time does the store close?"

People like that are so shallow and empty-headed, I'd like to think they do things like that because they simply don't know what to say that might contribute to any kind of real conversation, so they laugh nervously and overemphasize their polite platitudes - I mean, sometimes I freeze up and can't talk at all. Still, it leaves me with that nagging suspicion that they were being intentionally snarky and sarcastic. I can never be sure. One thing is for sure, though, if I know they're going to be there all the time, I'll certainly find another place to shop. Who needs that crap?

I agree with b_o_s. You were just a 'whipping boy' for her horrible, worthless, depressing and otherwise boring existence. You were lucky to get out of there before she spontaneously combusted! :D
