(I'm reposting this from a Yahoo Answers question I posted a few minutes ago)
Hey, I grew up with Aspergers Syndrome, OCD and because of that I had a delayed development in my childhood, mainly with maturity. When I was 12 I was prescribed Abilify, and a couple years later, Lexapro due to my "depression" caused by puberty. Needless to say all they did was dull/slowdown my thought processes and I wasn't able to verbally fend for myself or function socially.

When I was fifteen to seventeen I began to argue with my parents over many things, especially regarding me staying up at night. Eventually my parents resorted to calling the police as much as weekly because I was "physically threatening" them. In person I am a big guy, but I'm never violent. When I'm angry the most I do is pace around the house, but I never hit or threaten to harm anyone or anything. The worst part was the policemen fell for my parents' antics, and assumed I was a problem child.
At 17 they decided to kick me out of their residence and put me in foster homes for low-functioning (read: mentally ret*d) adults. Everyone there assumed I wasn't anything more than an incapable "ret*d". Various incidents ended up with me going home to home until I finally ran away to Portland. Afterwards I stopped taking my medication "cocktail" and what do you know, I can think clearly, I'm not depressed (Yes, the pills didn't actually help with my depression the last few years.), I'm a lot more functional and can fend for myself.

The thing is, looking back at my parents methods for dealing with me infuriates me to no end. My (normal-functioning) sister is going though the same thing I went through, but my parents merely call it a "phase". They made up various assumptions and told my case workers what they THOUGHT were my problems (lots of them being related to porn, being mentally incapable, using technology "too much"). Then they used it against me. Could that possibly be slander?

I'm at a loss. There was a lot more to type but I'm just putting down the basics of it for the sake of space and readability. In the case it's only a civil problem, is there any way I could make them feel guilty, or responsible? Thanks.

Although not to this extent, I'm going through something a lot like this. My parents do nothing but bring up medication because they say that I need it and if I'm not taking Risperdal, I go into a rage over nothing. For one thing I'm irritated that they keep bringing this up and then tell me to calm down after they've been arguing with me about this for the past year. But they'll make a comment about the face I'm making, telling me to calm down even when I'm in a good mood.

They also have kept a very short leash on me, there was a time when I was 15 going on 16 that I couldn't ride my bicycle any farther than around the block we lived on, while my brother, who was 8 at the time, was allowed to ride his bike all across town.

Even though I am living on my own, my parents have called me up to "FORBID me" (yeah my mother actually used that word) to BBQ on the grill outside in my complex because it was getting dark.

Just the other day my parents picked me up off the side of the road when I was walking to my doctor's office when I called them saying that I was having trouble walking due to extremely bad balance (this is why I was going to the doctor) and I couldn't stay on the sidewalk, and I was afraid that I was going to accidentally wander onto the street. Later on while I am sitting in the exam room, two police officers walked in and in surprise, I asked them what was going on. They said that my mother had called them because I was threatening to commit suicide.

That is an example of their ways of trying to get me back on my meds. Twisting my words. My mother even blackmails me.

I could use some advice of the same type, as well (can't you tell?).

Exactly. My parents did the same thing, twisting my words sometimes grossly out of context.

I've been wanting raise awareness about this sort of situation where parents try to make it seem like we aren't capable of living without special help or drugs, to a destructive extent. Does anyone know if there's a term for this? I've actually been wanting to start a Facebook group concerning that.

OMG! Me too!! !! I tried to defend the 8 year old sister from being yelled at and this was taken as a "violent attack" I stepped forward to intervene (I was just going to say something) Mom grabbed my face forcefully (she has done this in the past) I'm not without my issues IMO I was having a bad morning so I pushed my dad he I "guess" rightfully pushed back and slapped me! They wonder why I'm depressed DUH! there's your reason!! They assume "Oh are you taking your pills???" Uh ya. I have been upset/depressed ever since being on them! I relate this to losing college and upsetting my teacher (whom I'm not even ever sure I'll get to apologize too!! !) :-( I look at it like a scale College/teacher=positiveness home/parents= negativeness take away the college what do you have? NEGATIVENESS! So I'm depressed, nightmares, crying myself to sleep at night! The arguments got so bad I cried into a pillow and pretended to scream (If it wouldn't have come off as crazy I would HAVE SCREAMED TO THE TOP OF MY LUNGS! Unfortunately the most I can do is this AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !! !!

(Not the same LOL!)

I totally understand where you guys are coming from! :-)

I think your best bet is to help your sister as much as you can, but to move on. Chances are your parents already feel guilty, although they may end up expressing it in anger and by attacking you. They may have been bad parents. When faced with making a good choice or a bad one, they may have usually chosen the bad one. But people rarely set out to torment their children. Usually when parents do a bad job, it is because they lack maturity or skills or they may simply be trying to do the best with the information they have, but their information is flawed.

If you can find a way to communicate with them in a calm manner you may find that they may try to meet you half way. I certainly can't guarantee that they will, but it is very likely that the reason why they may treat you badly is they are scared of being hurt or they are defensive about things they feel guilty about. If you approach them in a manner that tries to be understanding of their troubles, you may find that they will try too. (This may take repeated attempts - usually in situations where there is long standing resentment and anger, the first few approaches do not go smoothly.)

Your post reminds me of a Korean film called "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring" It follows the cycle of brutality and the need for redemption. It seems to me that you need to fight the lure of anger and blame and instead do the hard work of learning to forgive. Forgiveness is much harder, but with it comes the possibility of learning and making something good out of something that was bad.

I hope this helps and that you, as well as your family, can find a way to understand one another.

Good luck

whether you believe in the courts at all or not, true Law wasn't established for what you have in mind, but I can similarly comprehend what you went through and how you feel.
