I am very upset because last night one of the goat kids I helped raise died on another farm. It was very stormy last night and their goat shelter collapsed .

I have so many photos of him, and his mother, who must be very upset as she was so close to him, and the people at the farm too, must be feeling pretty terrible.

I have already watched a beautiful mother sheep fade away and we have also lost three newborn lambs in our care this week, as they lost their mothers and there has been some really cold weather and they got chilled.

It is very hard living on a farm, heartbreaking in fact.

Would they have been eaten eventually anyway? Or were they not on the farm for the purpose of being turned into food?

No they are milking goats. Please remember this is the Haven. I am not looking to discuss the purposes of animal raising, I am upset because I have been raising baby animals and have lost so many in one week. It is like they are my babies, as I have been bottle feeding them. I am particularly sad about Eeyore as I took so many photos of him when he was born, he was very special to me.

I am starting to be sorry I posted this here.

I noticed the cute goats in your link, I'm also a big fan of goats. If there's one thing I've learned after owning so many pets, it's that death is inevitable in one form or another. Just remember it's not your fault and I'm sure they were thankful for the care that was given to them. I know for me losing a pet is like losing a family member even when they're feral.

Thank you MissConstrue, I am crying right now... yes for me even though they are on a farm it is hard for me not to go into "pet" mode with any animal. He was such a beautiful kid. I remember when he was born, he was lying there with his mother and he was so huge.... she adored him and wouldnt let anyone near him... he was very loved, anyway, by goats and people.

I have been so busy lately I havent been in the Haven much. I hope your sisters children are returned to her soon. I can only imagine how you must both be feeling. (((((((((MissConstrue)))))))))

Sorry to hear your loss.
I adore goats and had quite a few when I lived in the country. They are very smart and comical. It alway broke my heart when one died.
I used to read 'our friends on Maple Hill Farm' to the children to help them cope with one of the animals dying.

Forgive Rosenoir -- probably just a city kid where the only wild animal seen are the rats.

It is sad to lose someone you have worked so much with. Goats can have so many different kinds of personalities.

I would like to repeat that this is the Haven. Please do not post if you dont have anything to say regarding the topic I have posted. I will get the moderators in if I see anymore posts like this.

Actually I had come here to say that as upset as I was about Rosenoir's comment, coming back to see that noone had posted in the thread and all there was was that post- he does ask a question, which I will answer. I am working on a farm, which belongs to my boyfriend's parents, who are farmers.

It is a lovely organic farm, with deer, sheep and goats, vegetables and other crops, and they are more or less self-sufficient on this land. The animals are theirs, not mine, and I am here staying for a while doing some farm labouring. I am from the suburbs myself. I am not used to the ways of a farm, it is new to me. It is not my place to make decisions about animals when it isnt my farm, I am an employee of sorts.

I really do understand. My mama san, Gretta, died in a terrible accident, one baby who was weak, I kept in the house by the wood stove & hand fed but he did not make it.
I was so happy to have them when my baby was found to have a milk allergy, but could tolerate goats milk, so he was raised on it.

I'm very sorry, about the loses of your four legged friends and babies. I've always loved goats, lambs and sheep, of the animal variety. I can just imagine what you're going through. You've tended to those babies, every day. Death of any kind isn't pleasant to deal with, whether it's a heard of baby lambs, or the death of a band member.
