I just found out this morning that a man from Long Island that I used to converse with had died a few weeks ago.
He'd told me stories of himself and his best friend in the late 60s and early 70's. He'd talked about all the crazy/funny/stupid things they'd done in their youth. Sadly, his best friend was murdered back in '72, at the hands of his own father, no less. My acquaintance had never gotten over that. Their lives actually became the subject of a made-for-TV movie starring Robby Benson as the best friend, and Charles Fleischer as the guy I knew.
I sat back and took in the news, but when I thought, "Well...the two friends are finally reunited," I couldn't help but cry. It's rather bittersweet. My gut aches when I think about it.

Suffering in life is one thing that will unequivocally unite us all.

I am sorry. I have seen this happen, on boards. A few years back on another board a lady who had a teenage son suddenly became ill. And from this board, Starbuline, though I never talked to her, I read her posts..

It sounds like the man had an interesting life.

Suffering...unite? ...Ok, whatever.

Yeah, he pretty much had turned his life around from being a teenage druggie, to a responsible, loving husband and father and grandfather. He was certain his best friend would have done the same. However, his friend's father was so mortified about having a drug-addict son, that he shot him square in the chest while the friend was high on barbiturates. The movie goes with the father's story, which is that he shot his son in self-defense, but too many things don't add up.
I'm sorry- but I agree with most people's opinion- you don't do something like that to your kid no matter what. I can understand why the guy(known in the movie as "Brick") lived with his friend's death as he did.
Well, at least Brick doesn't have to carry the "What if...?" burden anymore.
