My best friend who I think of as an older brother (He's 19) told me today that he has decided to move to Tennessee next week. He plans to just buy a one way ticket and live there and stay with his girlfriend and her family (Who live there) because he is tired of living with his parents (We live in California so with the economy it's kind of hard for him to to get an apartment). I just got off the phone with him (I'm apparently the first one he's told and he plans on telling everyone else in a day or two) and I'm crying my eyes out right now and am close to being hysterical. I can't talk to any of my friends about it because most of my friends are also his friends and he doesn't want anyone to know yet. He has his mind set on going and there isn't anything I can do to change his mind and I don't know what to do, he has helped me through so many things in my life and also saved my life once, it's just going to be a major shift in my life with him gone. I don't really know what I want from you guys but just maybe some support or advice on how I should be approaching this.

Life is a series of challenges and changes and never quite as much as from our late teens to late 20's. However life goes change is inevitable, be glad that your friend is invoking the change he wants for himself.

It is easer than it ever was before to keep in touch with friends nowadays via the internet and I suspect you will.

Look after yourself and don't get too downcast.

Well, he is old enough to move out and it might be his time to move out. He has to leave the nest at some time. He also might need this experience. It sucks that it's your best friend who's doing this, but you said there was nothing you could do to change his mind. All I can tell you is to keep in touch. Be sure to send him a Christmas card. Hopefully, he'll end up coming back home anyway. Maybe he just needs a vacation from his current life.

You will obviously miss him

The good news is that this does not mean you cannot remain good friends. Heck, with the internet, cell phones, and discount airlines, half a continent away really isn't that far.

You have the forum here if you need to say more.

Are you concerned he doesn't know how important he is to you?
