I read online that you should keep the cage open and also you can put down safe traps with treats in. I really hope it finds it way back.

the hole is at the back of a gas fireplace, but the hamster is making noises in the wall a couple of meters further on. It must have gone through another hole in the chimney, if there was a drop on the other side it may not be able to get back. I can hear it in the wall but not get to it.

If I were the one resolving your problem, I would cut an electrical-outlet-sized hole in the wall where you hear the critter, extract it, and then install a dummy receptacle to cover the hole.

Yes. It might get a little dusty from the cutting, but the hole will be high enough to keep it from being injured ... and do *not* use any power tools!

Do you want to try? It really will not be all that difficult.

Id just yell at the wall "sorry buddy, but its darwin at work".

Keep the hole cutting as a last resort. Try to get him to come out by itself first.

That happened to mine once too. My dad did exactly what LeeJosepho suggested; cut a little hole in the wall and grabbed the little B***... :P

Do you know the point at which it entered the wall? They're pretty stupid, so it will probably come back that way too, especially if you leave food out (bacon works well, or peanut butter- nice smelly things).

If you are going to be away, leave the food in a bucket with a ramp leading up to the rim (but not inside so that it falls in and can't get out). Put smelly food and soft material inside the bucket and leave near the site of entry (leave as many 'traps' as you can).

It may have gone to sleep too, so loud thumpy music will wake it up.

I tried taking the gas fire off to get at it but now Ive just broken the gas fire :x  Im going to worry about gas leaks now aswell

I took off the wall socket on that wall and she hissed at me but it was too high up and I couldnt get to her. Maybe I should leave the wall socket off over night with something for her to climb out with (dressing gown belt)? trouble is I have to turn off the socket fuse for that so cant keep it open all the time.

Do you have baseboard heating? If so,there is already a hole in the wall big enough for a hammie to crawl through.

There are HaveaHart live mouse/rodent traps too... that should capture a hammie well.

The gas is the most important thing right now- if you suspect a leak (even slightly), get help. It can kill you or explode your house (hamster and all).

I think you're giving her too much credit for intelligence re: the dressing gown belt. Can you afford a handy-man to drill a non-dangerous hole in the wall?

Alternatively, bang on the wall towards where you want her to go (i.e herd her to the hole) and place smelly food stuff at the hole They don't like loud noises.

By the way, ignore the hissing- just grab any bit you can and apologise afterwards. You may get a few bites yourself for your troubles.

i still think just leaving food out is the best option.
if it got in there, it can probably get out.
