My mom is forcing me to go to my brother's basketball game. I don't want to go, but here I am, anticipating every loud buzzer and the shouts of overzealous parents. When my mom is having a conversation, she'll say "I dragged my daughter out of the house" with a smile, I don't know why. When she smiled at me as she said that on the phone, I made a stern face. After this, we are going out for dinner. I don't want to go to either event, partially due to my not wanting to socialize with everyone else that's going to be there.

She probably doesn't really realize how painful this can be for you. I imagine she expects that once she has pried you out of your comfort zone you will be able to "relax and enjoy it".

I have found that the majority of the time people operate under the premise that other people are pretty much like oneself. Honest people assume other people are honest, sneaky people assume other people are sneaky, and socially-oriented crowd-lovers assume everyone else will enjoy the kind of events they do.

I don't suppose you have any of those marshmallow-type earplugs you can use. I have found they cut way down on the noise but it's still possible to converse, and they are very inconspicuous.

I 'cured' my parents from dragging me to my siblings' events by taking a small dose of Syrup of Ipecac just as we got to the game / recital / whatever. Within 30 minutes, the inevitable would happen, and my parents would have to take me home early. It took only a few "Too much noise! Headache! Dizzy! Gonna be sick! RAAAAAAALF" events to convince them that maybe it wasn't a good idea to take me places that were loud and 'exciting'.

They never caught on...

The thing is, though, I don't have sensory issues any more. I am able to withstand loud music and whatnot, but I can't stand basketball games, not because the sounds are painful, but I hate listening to them.
