I know I'm gonna piss of some people with this but I want it to be said.I was trying to learn what it was like to be discriminated against.I looked up the blue eyed brown eyed experiment as recommended.I thought long and hard about it.I learned this, racism is not based off cultural differences but hate and the belief that so and so person is lower than you.I believe in the saying "everyone is a little bit racist."I believed this because I usually get uncomfortable around black people because they are loud and I freeze up and I can't carry on conversation and I get afraid around muslim women because I was afraid I might touch them and that would scare her or make her husband angry.Have you ever experienced this? What are your thoughts? This was also kinda linked to this debate I had with a autistic person because I said I hated that the DSM was making aspergers the same as autism or considered it low functioning. He showed me articles but I still think "aspie supremacy" is right and he was just linking unrelated things together. He showed me a video of a women with low functioning autism. She was waving her arms everywhere and babbling and she claimed that was her language.I told him that if you do that than there is something very wrong with you.I just never liked mentally handicapped people.

Why are you here if you dislike people with mental issues? even though you have aspergers.....at least that is what I got out of the post. As for the rest of that I disagree because I do not think I am racist at all though there are some that would probably twist my veiws around to say I am. I think different races are different.....not superior or inferior just different. Whether its because of the environment they adapted to, cultural norms or whatever else. Different races even have different hair structure..which is intresting.

I think TantricBadass was saying that he/she gets uncomfortable around mentally handicapped people but is comfortable here due to the need for acceptance by those similar to him/her. Also, I sort of agree with his/her quote "everyone is a little bit racist". I feel this too, although I wish I wasn't, I am partially.

i think that when people are racist, it makes them feel better to think that everyone else is the same way. but that isn't necessarily true.

i understood what the OP meant, but it didn't seem like a thread asking for support - it seemed more like a mild rant againt the people the OP doesn't like.

Well I guess I just kind of assume most on this site are understanding of the fact someone with a mental illness or handicap did not choose it and most likely cannot completely change it......I guess not, even here you have the people who would make fun of someone for things they did not wish upon themselves.

^^ This.

Also hyperlexian is right about this thread belonging in PPR. Toss it in the pit, I say.

Awkwardness is not necessarily the same as racism. Racism is having a negative attitude towards a person or persons so much so that the group or person you have these feelings towards, are incapable of doing anything good and have absolutely no redeeming or good/positive qualities. You can be racist to anyone, even a family member. The root word of race can be a bit misleading, as it suggests that race is the main factor behind ones prejudice, but the reason behind it could be anything.

If you are awkward around certain people it doesn't make you racist. I'm awkward around females, but I don't hate them. From what I read you are probably more anxious around certain people. One can be anxious for many reasons, but a racist is usually not uncomfortable around people he hates. He feels rather elevated I would think.

Let's play Is It Racist?

"I feel awkward around loud people." - Not Racist

"I feel awkward around black people because they're loud." - Racist

Though your example could be right, it's not necessarily absolute. If you hate all loud people and regard any person who is not quiet as being someone you hate (and see no good in them), then you are being racist towards them. As I said before we usually associate race as the defining characteristic and doesn't always have to be that way. I suppose the real question is whether applying a tag or characteristic to someone or group is racist. Like in your example "is it racist to regard all black people as loud?"
