Disappointed that I can't support myself
I am really disappointed in myself that I can't really support myself. I have a two year college degree and a computer technician's certification, but I can't find a job. It doesn't help that I'm in the second worst large metro area for jobs, Sacramento CA, the only place worse is Las Vegas. I can't move right now because I've got debts to pay off, and have to put as much of my SSI check towards paying the debts as I can. There are too many people here who are competing in all sorts of one man businesses, too many computer repairmen and auto repairmen and so on. This used to be a big high tech hub, so all the laid off CS grads are trying to pay their student loans by repairing PCs. My degree is in office management, so it's useless. I just wish I could move to an area where it would be easier to make a living. Maybe in a couple years, after I get the debts paid. I filed for bankruptcy but it didn't wipe out everything. I still have a student loan and a loan in my mom's name, so I still have to pay both of those.
My father could not bear the idea of mining coal when he got back from fighting in Vietnam. His only option in War, West Virginia was to mine coal the thought of having to go from open jungles of Vietnam then to enclosed bowels of the West Virgina mountains would have driven the old man insane. He moved to Buffalo, NY so he and his future children would have better job offers. My father does not sound or act like a New Yorker and knew only one person in Western New York but he took a chance. We were all better off for it I could not imagine what I would have been like if I grew up in West Virginia. Little did he know bethlaham steel and the car factories would die out and half the people in Buffalo would leave. If I can't get on disability I might have to leave in search of better paying jobs.
You have to move to find a better job or wait it out for the tech jobs to come back. Nothing is keeping you from paying your debts while living in another state. I would move but I do not drive and cannot take a bus without getting lost. If you were able to get yourself to college without difficulties why not save up drive to a new area where the jobs are rent a cheap hotel room and put out some resumes. A friend of mine did this in the 90's in Tenn. he put up with the heat, bad food, and slow witted people but he landed a good paying job. He moved back and got an even better paying job once he got some really good job experience in Tenn.

I can't afford rent-anywhere worth living-because the minimum monthly payments for the debts are so high. I spend half my SSI check just on minimum monthly payments for the debt. I currently live with my parents and they don't charge rent. I also don't have a car, so I couldn't work as a mobile computer repairman even if the market wasn't saturated, which it is.

Believe me, once I pay the debt I'm gone, probably to Oregon. See my other post for why I have to stay here to pay the debts. I have a student loan debt that I can't get rid of and a debt that's actually in my mother's name so it wasn't wiped out in bankruptcy. My mom wants me to pay her the money I owe her, of course, and I want to get rid of that and the student loan. My mom can't forgive that debt because she took out a personal loan at a bank to help finance the website I was trying to start, only she did it in her name. So it has to be paid.
Is the one in your Mom's name have your name on it as well? If it is just Her name you have no legal obligation to pay it. Its all on Her. If she is unable or does not pay, they can't make anyone else pay it. Only people required to pay are the people who's name is on it.
I am not trying to disrespect or put down your Mother in any way. But Just telling you how it is legally.
