Does anybody else cope for a while, and then get overwhelmed in response to a single thing?

To put this in context: my mum spent over half an hour monologueing at me, then told me that I sounded 'weird' when I gave short replies. Later on she answered for me twice when I was offered something, then explained away my yawning before I had a chance to say that I was sleepy. We argued about this later on, and the next day I still wasn't happy. We had a 'family chat' with my dad, where it seemed to me that Mum was having a go at my behaviours. When she started talking about how I act differntly at university, this hurt, and I suddenly felt overwhelmed. My response was to cover my eyes and ears with a cushion while saying "Stop it" over and over.

I sometimes feel overwhelmed in social situations, but I manage to cope - I think it's been a few months since I've had a 'moment' in front of other people. This time I just couldn't, though, and it took me by surprise. Does anybody else get like this?

PS. For more of my thoughts on this, please feel free to read my blog entry on it - the link's in my signature at the bottom of this post

I think the link Ashuahhe posted is correct.

Cathleigh, you sound EXACTLY like me. I never thought it was such a weird behavior in an argument to repeat the same thing over and over and cover my ears but my family say I act like a toddler when I do that.

As a point of interest, I was diagnosed "borderline" Asperger's also.

Oh and - interestingly, toddlerhood is associated with the inability to "control" emotions. If the linked article is correct and autism spectrumites feel others' emotions more intensely, no wonder people call this kind of tantrum toddlerish. I can't imagine what emotional maturity feels like. I can't imagine having people angry at me talking at me and not be horribly pained by their anger.

In a way that article makes sense - in school I tended to cry when somebody else was being told off, since it hurt me too. I was told to stop over-reacting. Although I'm not sure why my 'over-intense' moments happen rarely, while in everyday life I generally manage to cope without problems.
