Sometimes, I use WP as a life to do list or a journal, I know this might sound silly, but making others see what I am trying to achieve just gives some sense of responsibility that I really need to do these things and I should not procrastinate them, I would feel like you people are watching me and reminding me to not stop trying (even if you really don't care, It can be an effective way on psychological level , I tried before: http://cdn.wrongplanet.net/postt152840.html and it's working well for me so far).

I am going to start a new job at first of July and I don't want to repeat the same mistakes I made during the last 5 years at my old workplace that made my social life extremely poor.

So here are the steps (and the mistakes to avoid) that I should always keep in mind.

1- Get an outside life on my own before things start to come together: I don't have to be a social hermit while I am trying to pull my social life together, there are things I can do on my own, learning to swim is something I started already and a new activity I adopted, soon I want to enroll in some martial art activity, most likely Wing Tsun. Not only that would boost my confidence/motivation in life, but it'll make me more interesting to others, few the people would care about ancient history and geeky stuff, so I should really lead an interesting life in order to be at least a bit interesting.

2- Getting a car asap: for obvious reasons.

3- To be socially proactive, not passive: I made the mistake of not being socially proactive at all, I always waited for others to make outing plans, I should become more suggestive and invite people to do something.

4- Never to decline outing offers from colleagues: Even if they are inviting me to some place I don't like, or to some activity means little to me (unless If I don't know how to do it), I should consider this as an opportunity to build a social life. If I reject in a row 1 ,2 ,3 times , they won't ask me for any other plan or outing again. I should always pull myself and go.

5- Once I make friendships with people, I should always keep in touch with them: To call them, to communicate with them through FB, msn, I should invest a little of time for them.

6- I should make an habit of getting people's contact info: After getting along with them, I should try to get their msn, FB, phone....for obvious reasons.

7- I should not stick with only 1 type of people: Like nerdy and geeky guys, I should be open to other types as well, not necessarily the total opposite, the more outgoing type.

Here....be my delusional watchers.

PS: I already hanged out with 2 of my near-future colleagues to a coffee after the last meeting, I made sure to not decline them even if this was a bit unexpected from them.

That's a good idea, if it works for you! Some people experience the opposite; telling people their plans makes them feel as though they've already done something, and then the urge to actually act subsides somewhat.

It seems like a good list. :thumleft:

Dear Face of Boo

WOW What a great positive start you have set for yourself by accepting the surprise coffee outing and making such a well thought out list of goals. I will not only be watching, I will be rooting for you to succeed!

You have inspired me to work harder on #5 & 6 myself, both weak spots for me.

I will be very interested to see how it works out to hold yourself accountable here. Best of Luck for your new beginning!

Do what you like. It is your life.

Follow your heart and soul. But make sure that everything you do has got a reason.

Please do not even try to do anything that you don't want to do.

I would never try to conform to the world. I think the difference between myself and the outside world is precious. Change yourself as much as you are sure and understand what you are doing. (No derogatory. It is not easy to do also.)

(Sorry, may vague and off-topic.)

In addition, it is a good thing to trying hard in the real life. But please make sure if they are worth you to do so!

Don't do it, if no profit(or benefit).

Just wanted to say good luck with your new job. You should be really proud of yourself for taking such a proactive approach. Seeing what you are doing is making me feel like I should make a few life to-do lists of my own!
