why haven't we developed the ability to turn off our senses?

i know once i read a story of some woman that would throw up every time she smelled diesel. i personally cannot think or sleep with "jumpy busy" type noises going on around me. flashing moving things also bug me but i can find ways around them.


I know they have the ability to electronically turn off pain nerves for people in great pain. why haven't they developed the ability to do so with the other senses?


anyone else wish they would? any docs here that could develop such a thing?

Not sure about turning off senses, but I sure would appreciate the ability to turn them down. The trouble is, what I barely notice one day really gets to me on another day!

Thankfully I do have the ability to pretty well turn off my sense of smell, which also dulls my reaction to nasty tastes - not sure of the mechanics of how I do it though, which is a pity because others have wanted to to learn the trick from me!
