I do a great deal of art and been on deviantart for 7 months. Today I put a piece I am really proud off called self-portrait. I have not taken a pic of myself for about 9 years due to an aversion to seeing myself, because it gives me the same unsettling feeling i get while i do eye contact with others etc.

I considered it a personal and artistic milestone, and the first thing i get are nasty comments. Douchebags everywhere. I got a great deal more stuff that is really good anyways but he picks on this one.

Here is the pic btw, im damn proud

I find that most people are spawn of Satan. It's hard to find nice kind people these days. :(

Sorry I can't see your picture. :( I do like art and going to galleries.

I like the shirt :-) and the concept

You could consider finding a place where the storeshelves are not at a right angle to you (like the one on the right), that would make the lights and the shelves point in the same direction and make the focus (you) more focused.

That is a great idea thanks! See I love constructive criticism.

Something that totally grinds my gears is when people search for anything they can use to cause drama.

The picture says to me:

your trapped in the supermarket, and its like your in a bubble and its all behind you - pushing you more into the bubble... but youve decided to take a picture - and in that picture the supermarket is receeding away from the bubble - as if your proudness in taking the picture is pushing it away from you - afraid of the new you.

Those mirrors are fantastic btw - they bend everything and make it look less weird. Phenominal.

Maybe because I'm not a photographer I'm missing out on what's so "absolutely amazing" about this picture... you're very proud of it and ranting loudly about it... but I don't see what you see... is there something I should be seeing but I'm not?

Part of the reason you're getting such a negative response is the huge buildup you're giving it... then giving them something they can't see "amazing" in - like hyping your piano skills then playing Chopsticks.

It's a neat picture but I think I'm missing something that makes it "the best ever"...

I really did not give it a buildup at all, and it is not AMAZING, it is nice and well i guess I am proud because I have not taken a pic of myself, in any form in 9 years due to personal reasons. Besides it was a first time for an actual art piece. I did not say anything about it, just added it to my photography collection, I did not expect someone to go through the trouble to insult it, I guess I am still a little naive. I NEVER said it was the best ever in FACT I said I had better pieces to look at but the person went to the trouble to comment on the worst one, just to be a dumby about it and I do not understand that mentality.

Here is the painting based off the pic:

I'm just warning - expect a few negative comments because you called it a self-portrait but the only you in there is what isn't obscured by the camera... not really a self portrait at all to most people.

The thing you're actually proud of is that this is the most of yourself you've captured in 9 years? Then I'm proud too! That's a rather big deal to mostly overcome your fears. That inspires me to get out there and do something I'm afraid of doing!

Good job!

While some may appreciate art, they may not always "get" some styles of art. Which begs the question, why do these people even bother to comment at all?

Something to keep in mind, he may have seen all the great comments you've had in the past about your work and got jealous. It's no excuse to be nasty about anothers work, but some people sadly deal with jealousy in this way.

I'm sorry this happened, I know how much of a bubble burster this can be when you're proud of something and it's attacked for seemingly no good reason. Hope those nasty comments don't put you off from continuing.

Do you post your art to express yourself, or just to receive affirmation and approval?

As acidic as this comment may seem - it's right. I remember getting some criticism (constructive and not) about the music I wrote many years ago and I really bristled at it, taking it as a personal insult.

Unless it's obvious or you explain it - people won't see "art" through your eyes... and some people can't help but criticize everything - especially people who never create anything.

Well I create art to express myself of course, it is a much better venue than words I assure you. However the comment did throw me off. I appreciate constructive criticism. Encourage it in fact, because I do like to improve and I never get mad if something has found to have faults. I just honestly did NOT understand his stance and I know that confusion usually leads with the blues with me, I figure I let it out.
