Has anyone noticed that people believe things about themselves or things going on in their lives that are clearly untrue in order to avoid a
negative about themselves or something going on in their lives?

I've also noticed that. Is there any more that you wish to share with us?

Yes. But. Sometimes that belief can create a measurably new reality.

Yes. I know from personal experience that self delusion can sometimes be a great coping technique

Well known in psychology, the self serving bias. Learned last year in a psychology class that those who have the most positive outlook, confidence, and do no suffer from depression are those that choose to believe the positive lies. First lie to tell oneself, "it's ok to lie to yourself"
