And by "bad", I mean things like telling people inherently negative things about themselves or purposefully doing things which could potentially upset other people.
I agree, that tends to be a case of being rational and assertive, a good way to become rational so that you can discern negative thoughts is to do Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
You simply need to change your perspective and once you do that, you will start to notice positive traits or aspects of your life that you didn't before, you will also start to show more gratitude and build on that to achieve even more positive things. No one ever motivated themselves by sitting around and feeling self pity for themselves or taking up a self defeatist attitude.
