Screwed over by AT&T Yellow Pages (rant)
Some of you may not know that I've been trying unsuccessfully to run a computer repair business for the last couple years. I get calls all the time from people wanting to sell me advertising, usually online which is worthless because if your computer breaks you're obviously not online.
Well, I got called in early December by AT&T, they were selling yellow pages (phone book) ads. I was interested because where would you go to look to fix your PC if a virus is blocking Google (it happens a LOT!) and you can't use the net, well the yellow pages of course. The sales droid talked me into an upgraded in-line ad, and then told me it would be $180/mo. I told him I couldn't afford that, so he put me on hold for a minute and then said that his manager had approved giving me the ad for $25/mo. I agreed.
Well, when the contract didn't arrive in the mail for a couple weeks I got worried, so I called AT&T and got the runaround. They couldn't get a hold of the sales rep, so they just washed their hands of the situation. FINALLY, yesterday, two MONTHS later, I get a copy of the contract. It says I signed up to pay $180/mo! I have no choice but to pay it, since I have no proof that the price was $25/mo, and the contract says I agreed to pay $180/mo. The sales rep's number has been disconnected apparently. I got screwed.
I have no recourse since it's my word against the contract. I have to pay my state repairman's license next month (California licenses computer repairmen) which is $165, and I will have to beg my mom to pay it since I can't. I get my first bill on March 9, which is when the phone book comes out. The deadline to change the ad or the contract was apparently BEFORE I signed it! AT&T screwed me over, and they are the phone company for this area, so it's their book or nothing. Monopoly is a wonderful thing, huh?

There might be a way to finesse it.
"Yes, I want to go ahead and make a formal complaint. If that's what they reported, so be it. But I figure this has probably happened to other customers. So, I think it is important to go through the steps of having a formal complaint on file."
You see, it's a zen turnaround. You aren't asking for a reduction in price, just to go through the steps in filing a complaint. They might offer a reduction. ( and as you graciously turn it down, they might keep offering, closer and closer to the $25)
Maybe. Would need to be done with a light touch. Even then, I figure the odds 1 out of 3 if that.
