About seven years ago, I joined a local sports website just a year after high school, the reason I joined this website was because (1) I was heavily involved in sports (Varsity track Football and Basketball manager) and 2, I missed my friends and I was looking to make new ones. A few months in when I joined the website they made very negative opinions about auto racing (mostly NASCAR) this shocked me very much because I had not heard about this before, I then got into arguments with them, and they then began to say negative things to me. I left the site eventually but I still hear those opinions in my head til this day, and I am still trying to let go.

I have trouble dealing with opinions and it is hard to let go sometimes. I always try to move on but it seems to distract me quite a bit.

I wrote about something similar to this for a blog on Autism Society.

It's shocking how awful and rude people can be on the Internet. That's what I like about WP. It's the nicest, most supportive place I've ever been. I know what it's like to be haunted by stuff like that, but know those hateful people say that stuff to many others, its not because of something about you that they are dills. They're just dills.

Thanks Aharon. I know very well that the world can be a brutal place but after what you wrote there I feel like wrongplanet would be a great place to talk about my feelings.

Yep, its sad to see how people regress to childbeasts on the the internet, and I've sadly been known to do so myself on the occasion. And I know what you mean about how things that shouldn't get to you still echoing in your head and...well getting to you. My advice, do anything you can to not think about it. Play video games, go jogging whatever it is you do for fun. Stiff upper lip old sport!

You have to realize how deeply this is affecting you.

It sounds like what you've really got is a loss. The loss of an opportunity to make friends. It's hard to explain, but you can't "let go" of a loss. You may be able to let go of something you have that's bad (as long as it's you who wants it gone rather than somebody talking you into it), but you can't let go of something good that you lost because, well, there's nothing to let go of!

Another lifeline you have available to you is to look for friendship elsewhere. Keep trying until you find the right place.

Yes, its difficult. I think anyone in any situation though who has a real passion for anything in particular will find someone somewhere they run across who absolutely ruthlessly tares it to bits in the most degrading way and plenty of people who'd judge against them for associating themselves with whatever 'it' is.

I guess it just has to compute eventually that there will be plenty of people out there who have as strong of opinions as you do and that those opinions will be arched against your own and even more frustrating; arrogantly and grossly misinformed/underinformed. Lashing yourself for not being normal makes no sense in this category either just because - there's no exemption from it, not even being a hollow suite can make you invulnerable to being judged in that sense.

It also adds the element having conversations about things you'd never have IRL (particularly instigate), let alone talk to people who - if you saw IRL - would immediately be flagged as not your type of person. I've seen arguments happen as well because people of very different age ranges didn't know that they were and there was no currency or meeting of minds for the even exchange they both wanted. I made a joke once that you can have an old man, a college girl, a ten year old boy, and a zoologist-educated gibbon brawling in a thread together because no one has any real concept of the age level, maturity, or experiences of the next.
