Last year, I went to see my GP because I wanted to find out if I had ASD, since I had received an unofficial diagnosis elsewhere and thought it may be true, given all my problems. She referred me to a neurologist/psychiatrist who knew nothing about Asperger's Syndrome or even Motor Stereotypy Disorder (which I definitely do have). She referred me to a therapist who knew nothing about Asperger's Syndrome or Schizoid Personality Disorder or Motor Stereoptypy Disorder and who said to me "I don't know about these things but if you think you have it then you do, no-one knows you better than yourself." So I'm back where I started, six months later.

I feel really disillusioned about the so-called "experts" and about being urged to "get an official diagnosis". What sense does it make when the experts know even less about these things than I do myself?

I'm just venting my feelings. Do any of you feel the same?

I feel like some people who are "supposed" to be good at something aren't always that good. It's not their fault, maybe they just never expected to encounter a specific part of their future (like someone with Asperger's, being expected to diagnose them), but then again... Therapists, Psychiatrists, etc., they're the type of people who are more trained in fixing people than in knowing what's wrong, I think. That's why they let you make your own decisions while guiding you - well, it's one of the reasons why. However, I must say that I severely doubt what that Therapist said about you knowing yourself better than anyone else, at least in regard to your Asperger's. It isn't true in all cases.

Go to someone who's actually knowledgeable about this subject. Don't get a referral, find the person yourself, maybe even Google "Experts on Asperger's syndrome" if you really are desperate. Me? I'm not desperate for a diagnosis, even though I'm very sure I have Asperger's.

Yes, i made similar experiences and that's why i'm so fed up with experts. During my life i was diagnosed with about everything from sociopath to psychopath, to mentally ret*d and that's why i don't trust shrinks.
