I've recently found out something about myself that's very useful for me to know. I have a fear of Hippies. I'm not scared of any Hippies who might be posting, here. I'm scared of the Hippies that I see, downtown where I live. They're loud, they're dirty and they always manage to comment to each other about what a strange person I am. I recall that it wasn't too long ago, that I was making predictions that I would be a 125 Lb Hippie by next summer, which will also happen to be the 40th anniversary of The Summer of Love. How I was going to give up on London, Routemasters and red meat. None of that stuff is going to happen. I'm also planning to get my hair cut, very soon with only $10 left over from last week's $80 budget that I've set for myself. For one thing, I feel very male, for a female. For another thing, there's no use in a woman like me having long hair, if I fear and loath the hippies in my area. I'm not scared of the Hippies who post at WP, at all. I'm only scared of the Hippies in my area. Saturday also seems to be Hippie Day in Langley. I'm staying in my flat, or going on my club house outings every Saturday, from now on. I'll also make sure that I buy the food that I need for the weekend, on Friday morning. I should paint a T-Shirt that has a Routemaster, with words below the Bus that ask the question, "Do you think I'm strange, now?" I should make a point of wearing it to all the Hippie spots, to prove my point that I can be very brave around them. I'm sure that their faces will turn a nice shade of red.

There was a group of very young Hippies who looked like they were straight off the set of MTV, or Much Music walking towards me. They had holes in their flared jeans, and one of the guys were wearing beads. I was attempting to keep myself on Autopilot, by looking straight ahead. The guy with the beads made a comment about how strange he thought I was. I've just kept on looking ahead. My heart was pounding, as I've entered my building. After I got out of the elevator/lift, I've commented under my breath, that I will end up buying myself at least four model Routemasters a year, just for dealing with Hippies. I wasn't dressed that strangely. I was wearing a light blue parka, black straight-legged pants and light blue shoes. A lot of people my age dress sensibly. I was also wearing my fanny pack. A lot of people use fanny packs, as well. I'm learning to take it with a grain of salt, that Hippies will feel that I'm as strange to them, as I feel that they're strange to me. Is there anything that I can do, that won't include growing my hair, or ditching my prized Routemaster pin?

It seems the "hippies" are chasing you, from what you write - as they're always in your vicinity, always talking about you.

(that is, if you can say that there is even a such thing as a "hippie" in this day in age... they could just be ordinary stoners. Why is it that you use the word "hippie"?)

I guess I use the word, "Hippie", because I can't come up with any other word to describe those people. I could say longhair, or stoner, instead. I guess that I've picked that word up from my parents, and their baby boomer friends. They used to throw that word around, quite a bit.

"be afraid....be VERY afraid"....just kidding.I was interested in the hippies when I was in my teens(during the horrible "shutter' 80's in USA)I thought they were 'about" peace love and all that good stuff....after reading about some communes,ect.....I found out they were mostly about being selfish and doing drugs and making excuses not to do any work.....oooops.I imagine the people in your area who "look like hippies" are just another "trendy" click, that has developed a way to feel superior to rest of us "boring normal folks"(Haaaa,if they only knew)I used to hang out with some punk rockers because I thought they were about excepting people who were "different"....some where nice but many were just trying to find a way to feel superior after being picked on themselves.

As you already know....just be yourself....we all like you and they dont even know you!! !

Uhoh..

I'm dirty, and smelly, I'm free loving, and I used to have long flowing hair..

I tend to wear ripped up brightly coloured clothes, and my favourite thing in the world is playing music..

Uhoh I'm not working either, though thats because I keep freaking out at my jobs.

I'm a hippie!! !!

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

:P

Although they may appear intimidating, in my experience hippies & stone-heads are quiet harmless.
Much like auties, they do not follow the normal codes of society: however in their case it is by choice.
They usually respect people's differences and look down upon 'the sheep'.
Their drug of choice is mainly weed, and so the true hippie and stoner is non-violent.
I would say that your fear is ungrounded - but you may be dealing with a different breed.

It is the gangs of chavs, lager louts & football hooligans that you need to be wary of.

To blend in with the hippie you need to not use soap, wear scruffy clothes, do not (ever) wash your hair, buy a CND ear-ring, some cheap plastic 'jewelry' & wear a Sex Pistols T-shirt saying 'The only good hippy is a dead hippy'.

Like the above posters have said, most hippies are really quite harmless.
I think the problem is that you're afraid of people who are different from you.
Which as we all know is not a healthy reaction.

Experts say that the only way to overcome your fears is to desensitize yourself by immersing yourself in them.
Muster up the courage to visit communes or town art districts on a daily basis, and the fear will gradually be drained.

Watch a few episodes of South Park. When the hippies comment about how strange you are, you can be like Kartmann and say "SHUT UP YOU DAMN HIPPIE!! !"

Just have them do multiplication and then toss them a Twinkie.
That'll keep them occupied...

Hippies are like some other non-evil movements; good ideas, terrible implementation.

As for the hair, if you're going for short hair, I suggest you invest in a trimmer and do it yourself :)
Makes you look either really bad-ass or really stupid.
Anyway, people probably won't mess with you.

I have a very unique style and interest in guitar, which is bordering on obsessive love.

I have been told I play bass like a professional, though I never do it, bass just seems so obviously easy after a few years on guitar.

I mix electronic music most of all, it taught me dynamics which in turn taught me guitar and bass.

I play drums quite well, but not half as smooth as my brother.

Keyboards are quite easy too.

I found that through guitar, all the other instruments opened up their private parts to me.
