Saturday we had this brown out here. Too much power was being used because the temperature was a hundred and hell. So when the power went out I took my youngest daughter to the supermart to get cold drinks. We had seen the cop I like parked on the little neutral ground triangle by the stop light that wasn't working, and he was watching to make sure nobody ran it. So, while I was there I got him a big Mtn Dew.

On the way back home, I pulled over up on the median too and handed it to him, we talked about the heat and why the power was out then I went to leave.

Here is where it gets bad ok?

I made a joke "I'm going to make an illegal turn and go home" because I was on the median and had to cut across two lanes of nonexistent traffic to turn toward the house. He laughed and said "Go for it, be careful" and I had been talking to my best friend on the phone a lot that day ok? And when we hang up we don't say bye we say I love you. So I blurted out "K, see ya, I love you" and drove off.

I have no romantic or familial feelings for this guy. It was just habit. I say that to my friend all the time.

I feel like such an idiot.

BTW, lets be consistant here, when you are done reading this, imagine me waving and with my big ole grin hollering "I love you!"

I wouldn't think too much of it. In all likelihood, he shrugged it off and kept right on doing his job. However, I know what it's like to rerun social mistakes you have made over and over again in your head. I am 38, but until the last 3 or 4 years I was still replaying ones I had made when I was a young as 5! The funny truth is that no one else really cares. With that in mind, I find it a little easier to forget the stupid things I may have said in the past.

I re-run social mistakes or what I perceive to be social mistakes as well. What you did was something even normal people do from time to time. The (personal) embarrassment subsides after a while, you just have to give it some time. At least you remembered to say something, right?

Happens to everyone. I don't even think it's a mistake or anything.

Most likely the cop just thought you were a friendly person, and a great change from the people who are always going on about "f'**k da police"

Yes, actually he is. He used to date my neighbor. He's the only one that I'll let arrest me. He's very nice. Young though, mid 30's.

My 3 YO said, "I want to ride in a police car!" I said, "Only if you're in the front seat."

Heh, that's not the worst thing you could do. I too fall into saying "Love ya" when hanging up with a case worker, male or female. It's not that I feel something for them...it's more of a reflex, you know?

You've got an awesome sense of humor, OOM. Never lose it. ^_^

Thank ya'll very much! I try to see the humor in stuff, it not only makes little things like this more interesting but it makes the hard stuff easier to deal with. I don't always succeed, but I do try.

Thanks again!

Haha, it's kind of funny and embarrassing at the same time. Hopefully you don't see that cop again. I wonder what he was thinking?

Oh, we only have 6 in my town. That's 6 in total, not on duty at once. Of course I'll see him again, he doesn't live far. He only works weekends because he owns a business in the city, but I see him around all the time, just like I do the others. He's always real nice.

I'm sure he's seen half the town act a fool worse than that lol. It was still momentarily embarrassing.

Where my father grew up (rural Newfoundland, Canada) that would be considered normal behavior from older women to everyone they met. I wouldn't think anything of it personally.
