Do any of you have weird obsessions that you constantly think about and actually enjoying undertaking (for a brief amount of time before the guilt sets in over how much time you've wasted!) For me it's celebrities. I get fixated on them and spend hours looking at all their photos, reading their interviews, biographies, and then (even worse) because I have no sense of self I simply mimic the celebrity I'm currently obsessing over. This usually lasts for a couple months and then I've moved on to another celebrity. It's like my identity isn't rooted in anything but whom I idolize. Is this weird or what??

I can't really say that you are doing the right thing or not. For my self I mimic my surrounding. I guess I become a mirror of my environment. Depending on how long I spend time with the people around me.

But perhaps this obsession and mimicry behavior is simply -you-, maybe there is something you greatly admire about the celebrity: how they look, talk, behave etc. Obviously something about them and their life appeals to you, maybe its their fame, maybe you wish tons of people admired you. Perhaps they have something else you wish you had very badly.

I'd say that you have lots of self actually, without realizing it. There is a lot of you in your obsession, lots of identity, you just have to look. Often times what we want and desire defines us just as much as what we -appear- to be.

Hi JessicaAnne,

I have almost always had an obsessive hobby/interest like that, though over time I have added new ones and now sort of rotate through them.

Of itself I do not think such things bad or weird. Having a hobby/pastime you really enjoy is healthy and delving into the details of something is also the way one becomes very knowledgeable or even expert in a subject.

Many typical people do the same and perhaps it is mostly a matter of intensity and duration that can be a concern.

My only suggestion is to try to keep it in balance with those other things you think you need to be doing. I find that if I make sure the work gets done, and that I see to the needs of those around me first, then I can enjoy my pastime without guilt.
