My dad had to put his beloved dog Dusty to sleep today. My mom cried and got it out of her system yesterday, but he's inconsolable. Dusty was only 8, she had kidney failure. I don't know what to say to either of them, they are old now and have lost a lot of family to natural causes over the last few years. They are too old to buy a new dog. They have another dog, Julie, and Julie is fine, but my dad was really attached to Dusty, she reminded him of Penny which was a dog he had when he was a teen. My dad has few friends, the dog was basically his only friend. What can I do, I hate to see him suffer. Should I just let him grieve and stay out of his way?

Just be there, that's all you can do.You know your Dad best so let your heart tell you, sometimes people will want to share their pain and other times they may need space.

tell him you're sorry for his loss. offer him a hug. offer to listen any time he wants to talk. tell him you'll help him any way you can - all he needs to do is ask.
