I live in constant dread of becoming a nursing patient, having to live in a health facility and being separated from my cats for good. They're all I have and I'm all they have. We're each other's only chance at survival.

try to focus on the present. if you are healthy, try to put the worries out of your mind. most folks who go into nursing homes have gradually gone downhill and have time to prepare for someone to care for their animals. i don't know where you got your cats, but the shelter i got mine from wants him back if i can't care for him.

as for missing them, that will be hard. when considering nursing homes, you can ask if they have therapy dog visits scheduled.

Some of the nursing homes I've worked in have a cat or a dog that lives there. It is considered as therapy. The residents love them. Do nursing homes still deserve the nasty reputation they have. Well, they're not perfect. They've gotten better in terms of curbing abuse. What's annoying, though, is the residents can't talk to their caregivers because most of them don't speak English. In the past, the caregivers have been Haitian, Jamaican, Mexican, Pilipino, Ethiopian, Kenyan, and other African countries. Seems like English-speaking Americans are few and far between. That's a bummer.

That's a big fear for me too as I get older, especially since I have cold blooded friends that require special care.I get anxiety just thinking I could be injured or killed in a car wreck and who would get them?My physical health is pretty good so I try to put myself in the state of mind that the Dalai Lama speaks of " if something bothers you and you can change it ,do so,if not don't worry about what you can't change".That's not an exact quote but close enough.I know I spend my time worrying too much,I'm trying to change that and be more positive.Hug your kitties and enjoy every moment.
