Hi,

My uncle has been home from Arizona for the past couple of months, and I'm starting to think that since he went back last year, he changed. For years, he has been a severe alcoholic, and now his liver is shot. Every once in a while, his stomach swells to watermelon size, while the rest of him is a skeleton. He still smokes heavily, as indicated by him constantly stepping out the door to smoke a cigarette or four. That's not what gets to me, though. What gets to me is the fact that he has transformed from the funny, witty uncle I used to love and into a monster. He is verbally abusive to me and family members, manipulative, vulgar and short-tempered. I, in particular, take the brunt of his attacks. My grandmother rationalizes it by saying "he's just sick." Yeah, like casually swearing at me and saying I should give up on writing for good is a symptom of possible liver cancer.

It sounds like he's in a dark place. He sounds miserable. I'm sorry he's mean to you though.

He in all probability has either cirrhosis of the liver or fatty liver at least. It's painful, but when you have a drinking problem you can't normally stop because of that. The abdominal swelling, plus the malnutrition can cause that.

Also, remember that when you drink for a long time, on a binge, it takes at least 72 hours before your body can even begin to come back to normal and your thinking too. He would probably need detox to get off the hooch now because of the long term drinking.

Trust me, back in the day when I was drinking bad, I thought completely differently than I do now. When you start coming off the booze you have to lay there and deal with all the crap you did and said and the remorse and guilt and anger. You can't sleep but you can't get up and do anything. You have all kinds of physical stuff going on too and it's much easier to just go get another bottle than it is to deal with the emotional pain.

As hard as it is to be around your uncle, it's much harder to be your uncle.

From someone with experience. For what it's worth.

Now, my uncle is being emotionally negligent and verbally abusive towards me and my grandmother just because of something that happened a few days ago. I ate the rest of his bag of candy corn (A childish thing, I admit), and he threatened to beat me to a bloody pulp.
