Alone in a figurative crowd
I'm having one of those days as the title states. I've recently bought World of Warcraft, I love the game but I'm a bit overwhelmed and stuck. Anyone I try to talk to in the game utterly ignores me, some will insult me for no reason. I've joined a clan/guild type thing that my 1 friend in real life is an administrator of but it's basically a cliche of people who kiss his ass.
I get talked over a lot in voice chat, Lots of awkward silence when I actually do talk, etc. Sort of gives you that alone in a crowd feeling. But the odd part is I usually don't care about these things at all. For all I'm concerned I can usually function alone just fine. But lately I have felt very restless in life with everything. I find my games I used to love immensely, now hard to persist in.
I haven't even programmed (my special interest) in a long time due to lack of ambition. I moved recently and my whole world kind of changed but I doubt it would affect me this much. I usually never get lonely but for the passed couple weeks I have been. I've tried connecting with a few members of this community online but surprisingly even people like me have our cliques when we actually have a friend or two I s'pose.
I feel I have the potential to give the world something, maybe not something huge, but something nonetheless. It's been very hard to do that where I live. No one will even consider me for an interview, I've never had a taxable job as I've always worked as a farm hand or some other labor job. My family doesn't recognize these things as they can't see it, If I tell them they don't seem to care.
Any aspies on here who have been successful working for themselves? I would love to hear about something like that. I've always wanted to make a program and sell it but I only really make programs for myself lately.
If you're just starting out in WoW. I would not worry too much about what the guild does. Most end game guilds are filled with propeller heads that are only able to socialize in hexadecimal. As a low level, it's pretty much assured that you'll be ignored or brushed aside in that situation.
But the flip side is that until you get to the high end content you aren't really required to run with others. Especially in the 1-60 areas, most of them can be done solo and you never have to touch a dungeon instance and if you want to run an instance there are tools that find parties for you now. (They didn't have that back when I played.)
WoW is not as social as people would like you to think it is. So I would not say that the problem is you. You mentioned having an RL friend. See if you can get him to give you some advice or maybe he can talk a few people into running around with you with their alternate characters. Of course if your friend doesn't have time for you and none of the other people seem to, then there's nothing keeping you in that guild. You can always just walk.
Guilds are a hassle anyway. I always thought exploring was the best part of WoW.
Well, I haven't quite played WoW, but I'd consider trying to communicate through the in-game chat; as I feel it's easier for a lot of us to communicate through text.
If you were asking what to get, I'd say generally avoid something with a subscription; unless you have a knack for overly complex things, in which case EVE online would be a better pick in my opinion (Although it is heavily social, it's still via text) Although Dwarf Fortress (Not an MMO, is free) would be a better pick than that in terms of complexity)
I've just been playing GW2 lately, and while I do tend to play more solo, I haven't run across sort of "Ragers" yet. This is probably a good sign ;D
