Wow, we must have posted at the same time ... I can't go to my family's celebration because I just got a horrible cold. They urged me to come anyway, but I don't want to get them all sick, and the symptoms just hit me this morning (that timing SUCKS!! !).

Happy Thanksgiving to you (even though it sounds like mine), and at least we have this forum to make us feel not quite as lonely today.

The only store I could find open just had instant rice and cans of beans. Here's to "gourmet" meals while on wrongplanet.net!

Another holiday ... drive 50 miles each way to spend time with people whose language I don't understand and eat food that I can't identify. The only thing that sets it apart from the others is the roast turkey and the pumpkin pie.

Free food! YAY!

People ... meh ...

Sorry you have to miss the holiday with your family. That is, because you really wanted to be there. I am grateful and thankful today that I don't have to spend this holiday with my family who have, since my marriage, revealed themselves to be phony and insecure. So for that, I am thankful. I hope you have a nice restful evening after work anyway!

Luckily, the supermarket here in town is open till 6PM. That's good. They sell turkey plates (turkey, green beans, mashed potatoes, etc.) Since I don't have a microwave I'll just heat it there and eat it on the way home. Yeah, I have a history of walking while eating (or eating while walking). Happy Thanksgiving to everyone and to me.

I had two family Thanksgiving dinners to attend. One was scheduled for evening and the other for noon, but they ended up changing the evening one to noon as well.

The one I attended had only seven people with a median age of 58 and an average age in the ealy to mid 60s. The youngest person there was probably about 52.

The oldest person at the other celebration was probably about 50 and the median age was probably about 30 and the youngest there would be 1 1/2 now.

That turned out to be a pretty good way to do it.

I was scheduled to work tonight, but am home sick instead. My whole family has driven in to my grandmother's house just a few miles away, and I can't go because my grandmother is frail and my niece hasn't built up a strong immune system yet. Actually having the energy to sit up and read and type is an improvement over how I felt this morning.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone: glad that there's someone out there I can share it with. If I get up the energy to go downstairs and eat, I'll raise a toast in your honor.

Back when I was working, I hated working on Thanksgiving and Christmas, but depending on where you work and your seniority, sometimes you have to.

Here, it's a bigger deal to be able to get off for the Alabama Auburn game than it is Thanksgiving or Christmas lol. Really. I've worked during the Iron Bowl before. Stores are DEAD. The very few people who do come out during it, get to hear it over the overhead loudspeaker, because it's playing, loud, in just about every store or business down here.

WalMart employees are on the verge of striking because they made them all come in for Thanksgiving day itself -- last minute decision on the part of management.

I'm on the side of the employees ... it's just wrong to make people come in and work on Thanksgiving, especially if it's your only chance to be around family the whole year and family is all you have.

If you work in retail, then it is not wrong to require your employees to come to work on the biggest shopping day of the year. Many jobs require that the employees work on days that are important to them. It's up to the employees to decide if having that job is more important than spending that one day with family. If they know that they will be required to work that day, and it truly is the only day a year they can see their families, then in my opinion they should start "not feeling too well" a few days beforehand and call in sick that day.

However, I went to Wal Mart earlier today and there weren't more people there than usual.
