Now, someone used my wi fi to download illegal mp3 files.
and I had no idea this happend, untill I got a copyright notice in the mail... they did this twice, at least. and the copyright owners are blaming me!! ! I could end up in jail for this! they want me to pay a huge fine that I can't afford. and if I can't pay it, they can have me arrested. I could also lose my internet. I don't know what I can do, I think I know who did it, but I can't prove it unless they admit to it. and everyone knows these jerks won't admit to anything they did. I changed my wi fi password so they shouldn't be able to do it again.
but I could be screwed even still, I don't know what to do...

I am sick of people trying to hurt me! it's like most people I meet just want to hurt me! I've been beaten, I've been jailed, I've been abused, it's just too much to take... I wish someone could help, but I know there's not much anyone can do. if the copyright owners really want that money, if I can't pay it, I can't pay it, I'll be arrested agian, I've had enough of the horrible things that happen to me...
why does everyone want to hurt me? I try to be nice, I try to help people, I'm a good person,
I have feelings and I care about the feelings of others. I just wish we could all live in peace. I can't understand why so many people are such evil cruel monsters. I'm sick of the way the world is anymore... things need to change for the better...

Try to contact the authorities, maybe they can help you figure out what is going on. Do you have any idea who could be doing this? Like a neighbor or something? Try to stay calm and find help from someone you know.

You're a great person, don't let these people get to you. Stay strong and move forward

Is there a way to make your wifi more secure with a password or something? Or maybe you've already done that, and it didn't help?...I hope the problem gets fixed soon!

Scare the lawyers into leaving you alone. They have to be afraid-afraid, not just afraid that they'll loose money. I'll leave how you actually make them afraid to your imagination, just remember that lawyers aren't afraid of much. So your options are ether go to the media or do illegal, shady, scary things. I can't advise you to do illegal things, so call your local newspaper.

You should contact the Electronic Frontier Foundation. They have lawyers that fight copyright lawsuits (among other issues), and even if they can't help you, maybe they can put you in touch with someone who can.

link to their page on copyright trolls

Seek out the record companies and drill wooden screws into the CEOs knees!

Are you sure it is a legitimate email and not a scam?

how did they get the password in the first place?

It could also be possible that it's not them in the first place; there are programs out there that will get your password in under 20 minutes.

In the mean time, I'd recommend installing some kind of network traffic analyzer; with this you can pick up any dirtbag trying to use your internet.

If it were me, I'd keep the password the same as before while running the analyzer; then wait until the lowlife try's to use your internet, then I'd send the logs to whoever's sending you these copyright notices.

It sounds like the OP gave them the password.

I second this recommendation. If it turns out you need to lawyer up, then lawyer up.

just ignore it
they send those letters out to extort money from dumb people, unless you live in a European police state then theres a slightly higher chance of something happening.

basically just ignore it

A thought occurred to me... they may know your IP address but how would they know your email address?? Unless someone got it from your Internet Service Provider (doubtful) it seems unlikely they'd know how to send you an email scare.

If they sent you a snail-mail letter in the post, it might be more legitimate...

I would wait it out - but keep your nose clean!

No you can't. It's strictly a civil matter.

Don't pay a cent until you talk to an attorney or even a local police station. What is going on is not legal, they cannot threaten you with jail time or extort money like this.

Is there any chance that this is a scam? Who have you talked to? Have you confirmed the legitimacy of these letters with your ISP? What did the letters actually say?
