Flying

I’m in the UK and I’m desperate to fly to the States to visit a friend living there who’s been unwell for a while.
I’ve been in a plane once before years ago and I had no problem with the flight itself, but what’s holding me back is that all the steps involved. All the paperwork, transferring at a London airport and maybe at an airport in the States too and possibly getting stranded if I missed it, getting transport to and from the station, etc.
I went to a travel agent and they were nice and walked me through the typical procedure at the airport but I’m still anxious about the whole thing. I feel like a crappy friend for not getting my ass there and I wonder what advice the community can give. Thanks.
