My mother goes to the same grocery store.

She told me today that she filled out a complaint form that went to management that
informed them that a manager was rude to her.

She mentioned that without any shame that that manager is no longer at the store.

I always feel that it is wrong to complain to management about employees being rude unless
it is blatant. People have bad days or have bad lives. It is nothing to take personal.

I was angry with my mother.

Was she wrong?

I suppose it depends on what the person did to offend your mother. But if your mother over reacted and created a problem for someone who may not have deserve it, then yes, it would be appropriate to chastise your mother for it.

Everyone makes mistakes and it is important not to judge them too harshly or create problems for them simply out of pique. Maybe your mother made a mistake and should not be judged too harshly either. But if she did over react and you really feel she created a problem for the person far in excess of what they deserved, you should talk to her about it and, if you feel it is appropriate, strongly recommend that she go back to the store and tell the management that she was in error.

We each have a responsibility to behave ethically.

It really depends on how rude the manager was. What did they say or do to upset your Mom. Perhaps others had made complaints about the manager too. Really without knowing the details its impossible to judge. But assuming the manager was seriously rude without reason to your Mom, making a complaint to the manager's boss is justified. Your Mom does not have to put up with that kind of poor treatment.

They're being paid to be polite. If your mother did nothing wrong, then she was right to complain.

In customer service, it doesn't matter how your day is going. I've been near-tears and on the edge of a panic attack but still been polite to customers. There is no excuse for rudeness to customers, they are the reason you are employed.

If the only complaint against the manager was your mother, and there wasn't much in it, then I doubt that there would be any firing done, perhaps just counselling. It would take multiple complaints and/or other breaches of the rules for them to get fired.

*takes off official hat*

It still sucks that someone got fired, but unfortunately some people deserve it.
