I recently discovered I had an infected tooth. The tooth had an old gold crown on it, and food was getting between the crown and the gums, and rotting the tooth, and my dentist didn't catch it. So I had to have an extremely painful root canal, it was painful because the tooth was so infected that anesthetic wasn't lasting very long, and he had to keep poking me to get me to stay still.

After that, I got an infection in my left cheek from all the anesthetic jabs, and my jaw/cheek swelled up like a balloon, and I couldn't sleep nor eat, and was drinking sugary nutrition drinks (something called Ensure, if you're American you've likely heard of it) to stay alive for five days since I couldn't eat because of the swelling and pain. Then I had to have three fillings done on the adjacent teeth, and the far back one was under a crown too, and the anesthetic wouldn't last. So now I'm done with all the dental work, and my left chin is numb and the feeling isn't coming back like it should, and I'm worried it never will.

Also, I have no insurance, and the bill for all this was $2800. My mom paid it, but I have to pay her back. I used to eat lots of sugar, but I no longer do, but my teeth are still rotting away. Eventually I will likely be fitted for dentures. I am in a lot of pain right now, and I'm taking some old pain pills that were prescribed to my grandfather before he died, my dentist told me to simply take Motrin because oxycontin turns you into a junkie, which it does but it's the only thing that works. I hate the feeling of being "high" from it, I can't see how NTs get so desperate for an oxy buzz that they'll ruin their lives for it, it's an unpleasant feeling to me.

Anyway I'm sick of having bad teeth, but I don't know what to do. My dentist is gonna make me apply flouride gel as a topical to my teeth every day as a last ditch effort to save them.

Stay away from people like Dr. Thomas Teich!

Link to story: "Patients Claim Orange County Dentist Didn’t Give Them Care They Paid For"

Basically, this guy takes money for services he never performs, or for work that does more harm than good. He even killed a woman, and he's still allowed to practice!

Can your dentist give you a referral to a reputable oral surgeon? Preferably, one that can take on your case for little or no pay and still treat you like a human being.

I recently spent almost $10,000 getting dental work done, my dentist was probably the best dentist you could ever have. he was so gentle and always helped you if you were in any discomfort. I ended up having all 4 wisdom teeth removed ($3,500) then all teeth filled and 4 root canals which cost around $5,000, then I had 2 teeth removed.

Your dentist knows best, your dentist cares about your teeth just as much as you do, and if he says a tooth has to come out, you have to accept that he knows best
