I feel like a reject here. I'm not even good at making threads that don't get hijacked. I can't focus on anything that goes on in my life now. I hoped to get more instructional support on how to achieve better social skills but depression is a major theme here.
What are good reads that are free of charge I can use for achieving better social skill?

Thank god for twitter... I can answer this:

No you don't. Threads get hijacked for a number of reasons; None of which you can avoid. You're outcasting yourself, we aren't outcasting you.

You are actually quite right, Mister Cosgrove. One does not necessarily come on WP for direct help. I think you indirectly receive help when you assist others with their issues.

I don't know what hijacked means but I'm sorry you are feeling like that. I suffer from depression, and I'm new here and so far it's far from the supportive environment I had hoped for. Maybe we expected too much in our different ends of need? Try Facebook if you have that, Asperger Adult Support or Asperger awareness forum, The thinking's person guide to AS, there you often get helpful replies and tips.

You can't decide the OP's feelings for them.

Beyond that, I kind of get what you're saying. My experience so far with WP has been similar, I believe. It's like a set piece; from the front, it looks like there's something there, but when you examine it closer, it's essentially empty.

I have experienced up and downs on WP too, but that is what happens in any relationship. MisterCosgrove I am sorry you feel rejected but I think you shouldn’t give up just yet. Maybe just lurk around and stay in the Haven it’s relatively safe here. I think you could pick up the social skills you need by watching others interact.

There might be some misunderstanding involved. WP is not like a mental health clinic or training provider. Its just a forum, mostly made up of people on the spectrum. The thread titles try to organize it into areas where one can post and might get some feedback or suggestions, but the emphasis is on 'might'. A lot depends on who happens to be hanging around WP at the moment and if they have any thoughts on the subject you bring up. Even at the best of times its hit or miss. But WP is one of the few places one can get the opportunity to be on a fairly actice forum with a concentration of other autistic people. It is sometimes however like the blind leading the blind, because most everyone here has problems of their own, and often with the same things you struggle with. It can be useful however as people here are more likely to get it and understand your perspective.

That said, if you do some searches, there are likely many resources listed here in various threads, but you will have to do the digging on your own.

I think Wrong Planet has been noticeably more positive lately. Obviously, people here need support, but I tend to take breaks from Wrong Planet when it becomes too negative and depressing, though.

As for threads being hijacked, this really isn't anything specifically to do with you. In most threads on the Internet, it is inevitable that someone will post a comment which others find objectionable, and, of course, these people will respond to it. You haven't personally done anything wrong to provoke this.

As I always say to people in The Haven who feel this way, feel free to PM me. :)

Although it is not specifically about only social skill, I have found the book, Living Well on the Spectrum quite helpful in social skills. I'm still not good at it, but the book has definitely allowed me to improve a little.
Hope you stick around WP and can find some support.

You're right, I can't and I shouldn't try.

This. There are a lot of areas where you'll receive more understanding than helpful advice, because it is a group of people with similar deficits. For social skills, there might be some places that offer classes with more of a business/networking skew in mind. I know someone posted having success with Toastmasters.
