Was contemplating siberia.

Nice summers and sterile winters. No germs can surviva that winter. Catching fish, eating vegies. Breathing fresh air and 1000 km from people.

I live a few miles away from Ballard, WA, It's a suburb of Seattle but has all the things I like - restaurants from different countries, music venues, a movie theatre, parks, fitness centers, etc. It's also close enough to big concert venues (Key Arena, Benaroya Hall) and wildlife (Olympic Mountains). Oh yeah. Sign me up!

Oh, yes. It's quite possible.

If I was going to do that, this would be one of my top choices: http://www.missilebases.com/adirondack:

Quote:
Back in the late 1950's and early 1960's when the Cold War was hot, the U.S. government built hundreds of Atlas-F missile silos (for 18 Million each in 1961) to prepare the country for an attack that never came. Today, most of these silos lie abandoned and filled with water, monuments to governments wastefulness and a bygone era.

But now, thanks to two entrepreneurial cousins, one of these silos located in beautiful Adirondack State Park is finding new life as a luxury home with its own private airport.

Surely one of the most unique real estate properties you could own, the missile silo home sits on 20 acres (with 85 additional acres available) of manicured grounds, forest and trails. Above ground, it features a hangar and spacious open living room and fireplace with wrap around porch. Below ground, and accessible via stairs from above ground home in what was once the launch control center, now is a two level, 2300 sq.ft., 3 bedroom 2-1/2 bath with open living area and kitchen adjoined by a spiral staircase.

The site features a new well / 200 amp electrical service / phone / original 1800 gallon functional septic. Contemporary fiber optic effect lighting along with natural sunlight rendition back lighting. High circulation venting (two 18" vent tubes), specifically designed to handle the demands of everyday living as well as those that may be posed in a crisis situation. (i.e. a nuclear or biochemical attack).

Huge doors open to a large tunnel that accesses the silo that has an additional 20,000 square feet of useable space with unlimited possibilities. The perfect getaway home, it has its own direct runway access, its climate controlled and is capable of withstanding a nuclear hit.

The Silo has a climate constant/approx. 58 degree earth ambient temperature. It is 52' diameter x 178' deep / 9 floor steel superstructure. Entire steel superstructure hangs from gigantic spring suspension system designed to absorb shock of a direct nuclear hit.

As for the original question, there are several possibilities:

First, in the United States (in no particular order):

Bryan/College Station, Texas -- Plenty of events at Texas A&M University to keep one busy. Also, I know many people in that area.

Santa Fe, New Mexico -- I like the Santa Fe architecture. If I was going to move somewhere for the architecture, this would be it.

Sitka, Alaska -- Great fishing and reasonable population density.

Northeast Minnesota near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.

Outside of the United States (in no particular order) (note all are English speaking):

Ireland. Maybe County Cork around Cobh or Kinsale. -- I'd probably become a pub rat pretty quickly.

Isle of Man - has to be the racingest country in the world. I've wanted to go there since I read about the place in the 1960s.

Norfolk Island (near Australia) -- As I understand it, if you buy or open a business, permission to move there is pretty easy to obtain. Good climate. I understand it is quite laid back. Big downside would be the travel to the nearest hospital in Australia.

New Zealand.

The most beautiful place for me would be somewhere in the mountains, maybe Montana, Wyoming, or Colorado. I could go hiking all the time and wouldn't have to deal with crowds. If the weather go too cold, I would move to Florida for the winter months. I like the ocean and tropical environment as well.

4 possibilities -

In the middle of nowhere in Montana.

My own tropical island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean.

Death Valley, CA.

Palm Desert, CA. (probably my first choice.)

I would want to stay in Tacoma, WA. Most of my friends are here.

However, if I had the money, I would get a large home with a basement that I can soundproof and transform into my own private Man Cave. 80" 3D TV, Blu-Ray player, many gaming consoles, surround sound system with deep booming bass that'll shake the whole room, several leather recliners for me and good company, oak coffee and end tables, a humidor to store the Cuban sticks that I would be able to afford when I have the money for everything else (better not tell Uncle Sam about that), and a mini-fridge to hold my root beer stash.

I would not trade my 12-step friends for any other location in the world at this point in my life, though.

I think that Kinsale might be quite nice from what I've seen on the Internet and on tv shows.

I'd prefer the Isle of Man myself.

Some other good places in the region might be the Channel Islands of Sark (pretty much the only motor vehicles allowed are tractors) and Alderney. Probably Guernsey as well. (Jersey is noted for being nearly impossible to get permission to move in.)
