DH went to a store in Tuscaloosa on Saturday and bought a pack of cigarettes with the debit card. After that we had nine dollars and some change left on it. In the middle of the night, at about 3am Sunday morning, when that store was closed it was ran through a few more times and not only was the last money taken off it but it had a couple that were declined so we have to pay the fee.

Oh boy! I called the store and talked to the manager who barely speaks freaking English and he was extremely dismissive. Told me he wasn't open then. I told him that's neither here nor there because I'm looking at our card activity online right now and I read it to him. He wouldn't say if he was the manager or not, then said the manager was somewhere I couldn't understand what he was saying, THEN he totally dismissed me. He said "Look I'm busy honey" and I said "You gonna be goddamn busy when the authorities get there to look through all your records to see who else you or somebody at your store did this to! It's not a lot of money but it's the principle and you "honey" me again I'll drive up there and personally kick your ass right back to whatever hell hole you came from!"

The cop division I would need to talk to is gone for the day so I'm calling them in the morning.

I am so ready to explode right now!! !! !! !! !! I put the name and address of the store on my FB and asked people to boycott it or at least not use their cards there. No telling whats going on and if it's not the manager doing it then it's obviously one of his employees because it was ran through at that store in the middle of the night when it isn't even open!

He sounds like he's from the same general area that my youngest son's bosses are. I've found out that they are not terrorists and one of them is pretty big and muscular and they like the way my son works and have offered to have his back before. I think I'm gonna get my son, his friend and the big Arab guy to go up there and have a few words.

It's a good thing that, with all debit cards, you can tell the issuing bank about the fraudulent swipes and they'll credit you with it.

<--- Speaking from experience, unfortunately.

It's one of those prepay ones that they gave him at work. His paycheck comes on it. I'm calling the 800 number in the morning. And the cops!

I mean it could very well have been a mistake with their machine or something, but he was rude and dismissive so this means war!

There is a lot of debit card fraud out there.

This wouldn't help you, but one suggest for people using debit cards is to get the bank to provide you with a second account. Move money from the main account to the second account as you need it and only use the debit card on the second account. That way if someone gets the numbers and steals what is in the account, they won't get everything.

My debit card has no more than $50 on it at any given time.

I use a walmart debit card and they do not charge a fee if some charges are attempted/declined. It makes no difference.

It happens.

Whenever possible, use it as credit, makes it safer.

Don't use a debit card at gas pumps, or those little hole in the wall mini marts in the bad part of town. Use it only at places where YOU slide it, so you can be sure it's not being skimmed. Also, DO NOT buy gas with it, people hide skimmers inside the pumps where you can't see them. I pay cash for gas.

Credit cards are better. Easier to write of fraudulent charges.

That really stinks. Nine dollars may not sound like a lot of money to most people, but it is some people's whole personal budget for the month. And it belongs to your family, not some thief. It seems like that guy would want to know if crooks were working for him. They might be stealing from him, too. Actually, even if they never touch the store's money, they are stealing from him, because if customers notice stuff like that, they aren't going to go back.

It reminds me of a time when I tried to pay a credit card bill online and made a mistake with my bank account number because Southtrust changed to Wachovia and the bank accoun numbers had an extra number I was supposed to put in that nobody told me about. I tried and failed 3 times to pay the bill, so my credit card account was closed. I tried to call and get it straightened out but everybody I talked to was foreign and very dismissive. I couldn't get ahold of anyone with any kind of authority, just call-center drones. I actually had a bad breakdown over that whole situation. I hope your situation turns out better.
