I'm stuck in a job that I suck at
I suck at my job, and I can't just quit because it's my dad's business that I work for. I have no idea what I'm supposed to do most of the time, so I just spend a lot of time slacking off because it seems pointless to waste my energy trying to get this work done that I'm clueless about, like a fish thrashing around in the middle of the desert. When I know what I'm doing, I do good work, but it hasn't been that way in a while. I cannot be productive at this job. Things aren't straightforward enough. I'm confused as f***. I dread going to work. I miss my trade from tech school. At least I'll be back in college classes in a few months, so I won't have to be at work as much. F***, this job is depressing!
Are you able to talk about this with your Dad?
I would look at this as a good opportunity to get more focussed on where your strengths are and on those areas where you need more effective strategies to manage the things you have to deal with.
If I were able to get my son a job with my group, I would really want to know what was working and where there were challenges we could address together.
Good luck!
I don't know. I've been doing this job for 6 years and have never complained about it to my dad. About half of the time things go okay at my job, but the other half of the time things get kind of stressful and I don't know what to do. My situation will probably improve again by the end of the month. I don't think I'd be very successful at convincing my dad that I should be doing a different job.
Then he probably has no idea what you are going through. You should tell him and be very specific about the things that are difficult for you. He may be able to provide training or alternative approaches that will enable you to function with less stress and suffering.
You said you don't know what to do most of the time. The first thing you need to do is find out. After six years, they probably think of you as experienced, but if you never got certain basics, you need to do that. Your dad is probably in a better position to help you than anyone else.
Instead of trying to convince him that you should be doing a different job, explain the difficulties you are having. He may recommend a different job or he may give you advice on how to deal with the parts of this job that are difficult for you.
If you have been trying the same way for six years without success, it is time to try another way!
