We went to the beach yesterday with our dogs. Everything was going great until we proceeded to try to get her back into the car. She somehow got out of her collar, and sprinted towards a bushy field that is populated with rugged terrain and tall bushes and plants. The area isn't that big, but the bushes are tall and you can't really see much unless you're walking through it.
She is a rescue and she is extremely fearful, even with us sometimes. I was able to spot her a few times, but she kept on getting away from me. I couldn't chase her down due to the terrain and immense bushes in the way. After 5 exhausting hours searching through the bushes and getting all scraped up, we ended up tracking her down once more.
She is in a drainage that runs from the terrain under the street. It isn't all that long, maybe about 75 feet and the other end is sealed with dirt. We tried to coax her out of the pipe, but she wouldn't come to us. The pipe is too small to crawl into also, so it's a tough situation. We tried contacting the ranger station and they said they would keep an eye out, but animal control would be our best bet. Thankfully, she is microchipped!
We ended up having to leave around midnight, we had tried everything we could with the resources we had. We blocked off the entrance to the pipe with a box that was weighted down and drove home planning to continue the search the next day. I unfortunately have to work, so my Mom is out there now.
We still think she's in the pipe, but now we can't visibly see her like we did last night. My mom called animal control, but they don't want to come out unless we are absolutely sure she's in there. So now my Mom is out there trying to look for her and waiting for animal control. She is extremely distraught, as am I. We love our dog and want her to come home!
Sorry for the long post, but I kind of needed to vent. Does anyone have any advice? Anyone ever lost a dog and found them later?
My advice would be to use a piece of meat, and it if it's a bit spoiled, all the better. I would imagine she's hungry, and the odor of that should bring her running.
I live way out in the middle of nowhere, and had a yellow lab I just adored. No matter how tightly I would put a collar on her, she would always manage to wriggle free during the day while I was at work. So, I started just leaving her free. This worked fine for a couple of years. Then, one day she ran off and didn't come home until late. I tried to tie her up the next morning before I left for work, but I never saw her again. I hope your luck is better than mine.
