I was linked to this on another forum and decided to bring it here. I gave it a good skim but still need to really sit down with it.

Another way to look at things... not much experience with it yet.

Wouldn't having good self esteem automatically encompass self-compassion? The description of self esteem in the article seemed to boil down to "someone who thinks their sh*t doesn't stink" (pardon the term  ), but I thought that the definition of self compassion described what I've always thought of as self esteem.

Of course, after all those affirmations Stuart Smalley made it to the US Senate.

No it works the other way around, self compassion will help your self esteem, but self esteem without self compassion is about trying to be better than others or achieve goals, rather than learn to love and accept yourself.

One of the best gurus on this is Kristen Neff, I have her book, and recently purchased her course on CD - guide to self compassion.

good self-esteem means having an honest estimate of yourself. I don't see how it could ever be bad. it also means realizing that there is such a thing as core worth that comes by virtue of being human and is equal from person to person. market worth is what we have to offer society. in that, we differ.

Have seen her website-
she has an autistic son, I saw the PBS documentary about the family
(Independent Lens: The Horse Boy).

I think self-compassion is a fine idea/practice.
Beating up on oneself rarely fixes a problem,
just drives it deeper out of sight, which causes new problems.
