Optimism about the Year Ahead

New Year's is typically a time I feel sullen. For one, it was a chore to get through another year. For another, I felt each new year was overblown. For instance, let's consider the year 2014 from someone living in 1964. By now, we should have had a colony on Mars, flying cars, infinite leisure time, and someting like The Jetson's Rosie to wait on us. Well, we have neither moon colonies or flying cars, and most of us work very long hours for pay comparable to or less than someone fifty years ago (unless your job was outsourced to Rosie's robot cousins). There are doubtlessly many improvements in 2014 from 1964, of course, but my broader point is that the future is nothing special.
This year, I'm feeling more optimistic than I have in ages. Things in my personal and academic life are coming along quite nicely. I'm about to start a business venture that may not even turn up a profit for years, but will doubtlessly teach me skills I never had before. My spiritual house is (mostly) in order. I do not expect 2014 to go smoothly, and it may yet be a tragic year for me. Nevertheless, I'm not dreading it. Even if this year does not turn out as I hope, I know I have the skills to roll with the punches, adapt, and move on.
Happy New Year, y'all!

Nice post, I'm very happy for you and I'll continue the gesture.
For a long time I dreaded the idea of the year on my computer changing to yet another higher number after 23:59. It was just another reminder of my life wasting away by being stuck in "the machine". How exciting it used to be to look forward to going to the next grade, learning new things and playing new games that coming year on new years eve, so boring and futile the passing of the years had become.
But not this year, I've started school, I'm interacting and feeling accepted again. I've even made a friend who I've already got plans with for tomorrow, even though we're 1500 miles away. School is going great, I don't expect it to be easy, but I've found my niche in IT and am going to do everything to make it work. It already took me a lot to get this point, but I'm looking forward to where I'll be this time next year because I'm sure I'll keep growing by dealing with everything that comes on my path, which ever way it may lead me.
Gelukkig Nieuwjaar!

That is awesome, I'm happy for you guys!
The past 3 years have been really hard for me, but I'm really looking forward to 2014. I feel like I'm finally ready to let the past go, and embrace a new era of happiness and contentment.
It's amazing what a simple change in attitude can do for you. Yes, it's true that my entire life has been an epic disaster, by most people's standards. But I'm learning to just kind of laugh at it, and make the best of things! ![]()
