No you are not a mean person.
Have you worked there long?
I've been at this job for about 6 years but it's only in the last year that the young people have arrived - they came as a kind of "job lot" for one particular project

I don't quite understand what you are feeling. Do you envy them, or does seeing them just remind you that your life is not what you want it to be?
It's a bit of both really. It's impossible to ignore them because they are directly in front of me and one of them at least makes an awful lot of noise and throws a ball about (which drives me up the wall).
The noisy one isn't nasty or aggressive but pretty much decides the agenda for conversation - if he likes it, it's OK, otherwise the topic will be instantly changed. He likes... football and can talk for six hours a day about it. Other staff in the office (including people senior to him) take their cue on what's acceptable to talk about from him.
One of the other young whippersnappers is handsome and fairly well off. He's pretty sullen and rarely speaks but nonetheless has a woman old enough to be his mum chasing after him. This never happened/happens to me for whatever reason. It's depressing to have to look right at this all day.
