I've got 4 days off work after today and I have plans for each day, but today I keep feeling a few mild symptoms of a cold, like dry itchy ears, a slightly swollen (but not sore) throat, and feeling lethargic. I'm hoping it's not a cold; I'm hoping it might just be the early onset of hay fever (which I get every year around this time) or an ear infection or something (ear infections don't cause me much grief and they go away on their own before they get any worse). But I really don't want to have to endure a cold because it really hinders my functioning, and also I don't want to be contagious to other people.
I've got an outing on one of my days off, which involves a lot of walking and I've been looking forward to it and don't want to let the people I'm going with down. Also I've got a lot of travelling to do, my brother's birthday (I've got him a present), and a haircut appointment, and spending time with my family.

I hate colds. I last had a cold in December, which wasn't that long ago, and I've been taking natural remedies to help keep my vitamins up, along with daily fresh air and exercise, and eating well (I don't smoke or drink). Also I'm very hygienic, I wash my hands a lot and I take a bath every day. I don't see why I should suffer a cold again.

Do you commute on a bus? I always see those as barges of disease on wheels, the most likely place to get sick. Maybe one of those face masks might prevent you from breathing in other people's colds if you ride on a bus.

I had two colds late last year, each one was 3-4 weeks long. Ugh and now I am on immunosuppressants so I am even more afraid to get sick now.

There are germs everywhere; on shopping cart handles at the supermarket, on door handles, everywhere. I always wash my hands before eating and I don't touch my face with unwashed hands. My mum got buses while she was having chemotherapy and she never picked up any colds.

I don't particularly want to go out in public with a face mask on, although it seems sensible, it's socially unacceptable, as I've never seen anyone wearing a face mask in public.

Plenty of people wore masks

I highly recommend you should eat a Whole-food Plant-based diet.. Plenty of dark leafy greens, both Cruciferous Family and Allium Family vegetables... and nutritionally dense fruits, such as apples, berries, and kiwifruits.
Cruciferous vegetables: broccoli, cabbage, kale, collard greens, brussel sprouts.
Allium vegetables: green onions, yellow onions, garlic, leeks, chives, etc.

That also means no junk foods, no processed foods, but eat the natural completely Whole Foods.. ie. Eat the whole grape and apple, not it’s juice.. eat the whole olive and avocado, not it’s oil..

Meat, Eggs, also cause Inflammation, and remember having ASD, that dairy products is a big NO-NO. Don’t drink cows milk and cheese. And Wheat Gluten makes ASD symptoms worse, so eat Gluten free foods.

I eat like this all the time. Every day.

The result??

I haven’t had a cold in years. Really.

If a cold virus does hit me, the effect is, I might feel very slightly sluggish, or a little runny nose one morning, so then I try get rest and lots of warm fluids, particularly Japanese Green Tea, and a real cold never totally happens.. Then I will feel fine just a couple of hours later. As if I didn’t have a cold in the first place. And I’m fine for the rest of the year.. No colds. Just plenty of energy and endurance.

It really works for me. And studies show it works for others too.

Foods That Actually Boost the Immune System

Eat Berries such as Kiwifruits Regularly

Drink Green Tea Regularly

Hopefully this helps.

I don't like tea.

Most of those foods are gas-inducing products (I steer clear of sprouts).

What does ASD have to do with drinking milk and colds? I'm not lactose intolerant.

I do eat a lot of fruit (fruit doesn't give me gas), I often have cut up apple along with kiwi and mango and other natural fruit for lunch often.

I sometimes have chicken soup for lunch on other days, or a banana sandwich. And I often have leafy greens and vegetables with my dinner.

I'm not really one to believe in focusing on diet to solve all my health problems. I know plenty of people who consume more junk food than me, and smoke, and yet they rarely get colds.

I try to get exercise and enough sleep, as those both contribute towards a healthy immune system too. I walk 2 miles to work each day, and I carry a big bottle of water so I don't get dehydrated. This also helps me sleep well, so I get my sleep too.

My skin is rather healthy, and if I get a scratch or a bruise it heals up quickly. Usually that's a sign of a good immune system.

A gentle preventative that I try when I am worried that my suddenly sore/itchy feeling throat might signal a potential illness is a thorough rinse/gentle gargle with very warm salted water. Don't overdue the salt but be sure you know it's there. Say, stir a half teaspoon salt into 6 oz of very warm water. This can help alleviate any mouth sores. Repeat as needed but try not to be swallowing any. You can rinse with nonsalty warm water if needed.

I had to take immunosuppressants for a few years and (weirdly) I never got a cold during that time. I think the reason was that I was more aware of the risk. You sound like you already do as much as you can... like washing hands before eating and don't touch your face when you're out. Face masks are a waste of time. After a couple of minutes they are warm and damp from your breath... then you're better off without them.

Food does not help against a viral infection, anyone claiming that it helps is an unscientific snakeoil peddler wanting to sell you something.

Fact: Viruses don't give a s**t of how much nutrients you have in your body, you will still get sick since it still takes time for the immune system to kick in, the immune system does not go out and preventively create antibodies. There are over 200 (plural) strains of the common cold, that is the main reason why there is no vaccine for "the flu" (singular), and there is a good chance that you can be hit up to 3 times during 12 months.

The only thing that helps is a protective layer of either a full body suit (1) with positive airflow or at least covers for your mouth/nose (2), but that would make you look like a weirdo (unless you are in Asia). Best thing to do altogether is to avoid public transport during flu season like noca suggested. Get a bicycle.

Or just deal with it. I am.

I knew someone here would say that.

Really, I am people aware and I have never seen anyone wearing a face mask, unless they're workmen or something, so protect them from breathing in dust, or nurses in hospitals. But people in general, like on buses or in supermarkets, no I have literally never seen anyone wear a face mask to protect them from colds. Like I said, I'm people aware so I would notice if someone was wearing a face mask.

About five years ago, many people of East Asian descent wore face masks because of some major flu epidemic in China.

A few people here still wear face masks. Mostly, they are of East Asian descent.

Neither have I, ever. It depends a lot on where one lives.

Yeah but you admitted in another thread that you bite your nails and I have never met anyone who washes their hands before they bite their nails. A clear pathway to get sick.
