There's this stupid intersection across the street from the library where there's a crosswalk but no light. I'm generally a really cautious person by nature, but whenever books or information are involved, caution always seems to go out the window, so I decided to try to cross at the crosswalk. The cars were going really fast, but I figured that if I waited for my side of the road to clear, I could give enough time to the cars on the other side to let me cross. Long story short, they didn't. When I realized they weren't going to, I panicked and tried to run back to the first sidewalk, but I tripped and fell on my face in the crosswalk with a big truck approaching! I managed to get myself together enough that I was able to pick myself up and get back to the sidewalk and then broke down in tears. I don't need to hear about how lucky I was!! I already know that, and the thought's terrifying me, and now I don't want to go to sleep for fear of having nightmares about it!!

This happens to everyone. I was once hit by a car while riding my bike; fortunately, all I sustained was cuts.

I'm sorry you had to go through this. But you do need your sleep. I understand you don't want to have nightmares--but I believe nightmares are a way for you to resolve what's going on in your head after what happened today.

I hope you feel better tomorrow. I would go back to that intersection and cross it again.

How hard did you land on your face, is there anyone who can check you over for concussion?

Don't fret about breaking down and blubbing, after all, you fell on your face and had a close call. It's OK to be shaken up by this. You need to sleep or you'll feel terrible tomorrow. Nightmares? So what. That's your subconscious processing traumatic crap, let it happen.

Have you eaten anything since this happened?

EDIT: can you contact your local authority and complain about the unsafe crossing? Kick up a big enough fuss and something positive might come from your experience.

I don't think too hard - the only injury on my face is one nick on the inside of my mouth where I bit myself. Most of the tender spots are on my arm, knee, or hip. I did have some water and some food since (chewing on anything is a favorite way for me to burn nervous tension). Thanks for the advice. I'll try throwing a stink tomorrow.

Eating is a good comfort exercise.

Munching large quantities of sugar before bed won't help you sleep, but there's a reason we give kids icecream and sweets when they're stressed and hurt and upset. Works for adults too, good medicine.

Unless you're diabetic of course :D

That must have been terrifying. I am glad that you are ok. I was in a car wreck once because I did not look well enough around a low visibility corner. It was hard to get back in the car even though my injuries were minor. Try not to let this close encounter keep you from using that street crossing.

Hugs

I'm glad that you're not dead. Does your face hurt?

So... status update. Woke up today feeling much more emotionally stable. Woke up a few times in the middle of the night, but at least not panicky or anything. No nightmares (Thank god) Most of the tender spots are still there (probably to be expected), and my neck and shoulders are stiff (also probably to be expected, what with stress). I called the State Highway Administration today and left a message to request that they do something about the intersection. If they don't get back to me, I'll try again on Monday.

That sucks. Couple years ago I actually did get hit, not very hard thankfully but hard enough to lift me in the air for a moment and give me a bruise on my thigh. Luckily I didn't just go down because the driver might not of seen me until it was too late if I wasn't pounding on his hood. Was both our faults, driver was yacking/maybe texting on a cell phone not paying attention and I darted across the intersection probably when I shouldn't of. I live in the city now and it has those timed crosswalks that count down, makes things a lot easier.

I do too! And generally speaking, I'll go out of my way to cross at those! It's just that for whatever reason, my usual caution always seems to go by the wayside when there's books and research materials involved. One time I almost got myself thrown out of a Barnes and Noble for trying to climb the shelves to get a book I couldn't reach and breaking one of the shelves.

Yeah...the Thirst for Knowledge does that to me as well!

When I was a toddler, I used to throw books down from library shelves; perhaps a premonition of things to come?

You know the famous library with the lions? One time years and years ago, I tripped over a blind man's cane right in front of it (I used to live in that place). Must be an Aspie thing. Poor blind guy went flying and me too. I started having almost crippling panic attacks after that, it took me months and lots of hard work to get over them. But I still freak when someone comes toward me using a cane, I steer clear!

I hope you feel better soon and you can bounce back without going through any long term psychic stress!

Well anyway, you know how they say that you are more likely to have an accident in or near your home because it's where you are most often? I guess for Aspies that's a library. :D
