I have a bird feeder on my patio. This morning, there was a lot of chirping by what I think is a male house finch. There was the body of probably his mate under the feeder. I don't know how she died. I feel terrible both for the dead bird but mostly for its mate who (at dusk) is still out there upset and chirping. I wonder where he sleeps and will he spend all night on the patio hoping his mate will wake up?

Sigh! I am so sorry to hear this. We lose a lot of birds here who hit our windows.

It always seems to be more of a loss to me when we lose a member of the animal family, as opposed to a human.

Thank you. I agree with the difficulty losing a member of the animal family.

Death is never easy to deal with. I wish there was something I could type that would actually help, but the most I can do here is express sympathy... I'm sorry man.

My favourite animal is the Grey Heorn. On the 19/05/2010 I had a young Grey Heron literally died in my arms. I still have some of her feathers (in fact I use one as a bookmark) and every now and again they will make me cry. Trampled by horses the poor thing, wing and leg broke, was horrible wiping her blood from my arm. Amazing though to actually hold real living real wild Heron, poor thing.

That's so sad about the Grey Heron that died in your arms. I used to walk on a trail that had a bridge over a river. There was a Blue Heron that frequently fished in the river. One day, it flew under the bridge where I was standing. It was one of my best life experiences, that magnificent bird with the huge wing span glided under where I stood.

My fascination for the bird started in similar circumstances the those you describe. Only this happened at 2 in the morning thus was dark and it frightened the life out of me. I used to smoke back in the day and was out for a walk and a cheeky spliff, As soon as I set foot on the bridge over the small stream that runs through the village I live, there was this big commotion and literally from under my feet it flew. Amazing birds.

Yeah, that sort of thing really gets to me too. Just do what you can. I would give the deceased bird a little burial and place a rock there. Then continue to feed the lone mate. In time he may find another friend.

Thank you all for your replies; I feel better. I will have a little burial per Toy_Soldier's suggestion. Thanks.

Well, I just buried the little bird (next snapdragon plant). The male had reduced how often he came by the patio. I filled the bird feeder but forgot to put it up. When I went out to put up the feeder, the other birds flew off but the male mate of the deceased bird stayed and only flew away when i approached to hang up the feeder.

I really appreciate your suggestions and support. Thanks, again.

Keep up with the feeding, and maybe try to get feed specifically for finches. Perhaps you can attract a new friend for the lonely bird, and be a birdy matchmaker.

I have several birdy graves myself and on the top it looks like a rock garden, but we remember them and I plant flowers around it.
