My Nan lives on her own and has had Alzheimer's for over 6 years now, and my family have been doing all they can to help, but they decided that it was time she needed another assessment and arranging for her to go into a care home because she can't look after herself any more. She has carers go in to check on her twice a day, but we are beginning to feel like it's not enough and they don't really do a lot.

But anyway we got a social worker involved and gave them our numbers to contact one of us, but for some reason they contacted my Nan instead, and my Nan doesn't know she has Alzheimer's and so told them on the phone that she's fine and can do everything for herself. The social worker took her word for it, then phoned my auntie up and told her that my Nan is ''of sane mind'' and then they just crossed her off their books. I'd have thought social workers would be trained to understand people with Alzheimer's, and that most think that they're OK because they have forgotten that they have the disease and think they are just going on with normal life like they were before they got it, or some even think they're back in the 50's and are just happy there.

Why don't these people understand Alzheimer's? What can we do to get more descent help for my Nan? Just because she can walk and talk and laugh doesn't mean to say she's capable of taking care of herself. She is very vulnerable living on her own, and we don't have time to look after her because we have to go to work and have families, etc. Does anyone else have this problem? What can we do to get better care for our elderly loved one? Why are these Alzheimer's support teams turning a blind eye? Maybe my family are too honest and should ''lay it on thick'', but then why should we? Anyone with progressed Alzheimer's require help, and should be cared for properly.

First of all, your Nan is not okay if she does have Alzheimer's. You or another relative should call up the aids and tell them that she needs help. If you have to you can record her or something and show it to them so they know what you mean in case the false "sane" kicks in again the next time they call.

Sadly everything is about ticking enough boxes when it comes to these sorts of requirements. I suggest you keep pressing them, until they agree to meet you; they will have had to have telephoned your gran first as she was the subject that may/may not have required care.

You'll need to check your county council's FACS eligibility thresholds (critical/substantial/moderate/low) as to what additional help she may be eligible for.

It sounds awful, but I suspect f your gran owns her own house, then they'll be more willing to put her in a home, as it's coming out of her own money (they sell-off the house ASAP, to fund her care), if she is reliant on the authority paying, then they will do it when, to be frank, she's set light to the kitchen or somesuch.
