I learned recently that my nephew had a methadone addict as her biological mother; it may serve as a reason why he's been sick as of late (and as often).

That brief preamble leads me to ask the forum if making a search for my own biological parents is worth the effort; I have thought about this at times since my teenage years, BTW.

If you truly want to know who your parents are, then yeah, it's worth the effort. It may even bring some closure. If you do find them, are you looking to cultivate a relationship with them? You don't have to actually answer that; just something to think about. Just mentally prepare yourself beforehand if you decide to pursue this.

Be careful,I hadn't seen my bio mom since I was sixteen. She found me and then started to mooch money and not pay it back. She has a drug habit, did them when she was pregnant with me,terrorized me as a child, gave me up for adoption, then shows back up expecting to be treated as a real parent. She even suggested moving in with me 8O I don't have anything to do with her,she made her bed and she can lie in it.

I made the search, mostly to answer all those unanswered questions.

I think what surprised me the most is the degree to which my b-mom had been affected by it all, since it felt like a pretty calm, sterile process the way it was described to me but actually it was pretty chaotic. As hard as it was on me, at least I was extricated from the family situation. She had to keep on dealing with it. Then when I found her, I was back in that same system that had caused me to be put up for adoption. I got closure, but at a price. It actually brought some reconciliation in some parts of the family. I'd say overall it was worth it.

So you do have to consider a whole range of what you might be walking into. It may be worth the effort, but going in, it would be good to have some clear ideas about boundaries for yourself and for your birthfamily. It sounds like you may be wondering about health information. Have you read any books on searches and reunions?

Betty Jean Lifton wrote some of the best adoption literature in my opinion.

I really don't want to go down the road of establishing relationships with my b-rents, rather if there were any health problems on their part that led them to put me on the adoption circuit.

That's fine, too. In life, if you have questions, then it's up to you to go and find the answers. If you don't mind me asking, what is it exactly that's preventing you from taking the step towards learning more about birth parents? Because when I reread your post, I don't think the question you should be asking yourself is "is this worth it", but rather, "am I ready to learn the truth?" Sometimes, the truth can hurt, so you may need to brace yourself for it.
