Criticism of Things You Like
Does it upset anyone here when someone makes an unprovoked attack against something you like? Because my older sister said a movie I liked was terrible, and it just pissed me off to the point where I was considering unfriending her on Facebook and even disowning her. It's a hell of a lot better, in my opinion, if people say "I didn't like it" or "I didn't care much for it" instead of outright attacking something.

Eh, I'm not so bothered by it. Some could use more tact but at the end of the day opinions are opinions regardless. I actually have one friend who is cool and all otherwise but gets bent out of shape whenever anyone says something bad about Halo.

My only problem with others disliking something I enjoy is that, after telling them my reasons for disagreeing (and agreeing in part) with them, they focus in on my statements as proof that what I like is wrong. I can disagree with people all the time, but I would never presume to use their opinions as proof that something is wrong. In other words, "nobody could possible like X, Y and Z, so if you do, you are proof that X, Y and Z are wrong, like I said they were."

Well clearly she thought it was terrible but you liked it....I mean it would upset me if someone consantly was talking crap on something they know i like, like to get to me. But yeah even if it might be a little hard to take if someone makes a general comment about something they don't like and it was something I happened to like I don't really get upset as its not an insult towards me.
I certainly would not unfriend a sibling on facebook, or disown them because they say a movie or show or something I like is 'terrible' since that's an opinion and not everyone is going to like the same movies.

Criticisms of people who are similar to me or criticisms of things I like feel like direct attacks made upon me. I know it is irrational and, quite likely, there is no criticism of me in the person's remarks, and yet it is hard for me to not feel like I am being attacked. In a rational world I would shrug and say "well, that's just, like your opinion, man." but I still feel like my worth is being called into question.
I understand how you feel. It's irrational, but I feel the same way.

I've been critized and lectured because my interest are considered child like, I don't hold it against people though, it's only an opinion, not something I can oh have to abide by.
