Safety in jeopardy, fearing for family's lives...

The child abductor/murderer of my mother's little cousin many years ago has been transferred from a prison half the state away to one only about 15-20mins outside of town (note: Australian states are significantly larger than states of other countries. By 'half a state' I mean about 800 miles/1300km)

He is nearing possible release soon, but we're not sure how soon.

My mother is not registered to vote and thus harder to trace regarding city records, but my grandmother isn on the electoral roll.

We're fearing if he may possibly track us down.

We're moving soon to a place 4 hour away in just a few weeks - thank f*cking god.

But at the moment we are still here and he is essentially just down the road from us.

I'm afraid.

Not even for myself as I'm not really afraid of death - more afraid of being kidnapped/tortured/etc. otherwise if I was shot dead I wouldn't care. If I die I die.

It's my family and the people I love I'm far more worried about.

Damn that is horrifying. I can't believe your government didn't take your safety into account.

Are your family, as relatives of a victim, entitled to speak at his release hearing?
I mean... I imagine that would be its own particular type of horrifying.
But I know in the US there is a provision for making absentee statements to parole boards on behalf of relatives of victims - like, letters on behalf of relatives.

There is a murderer of one of my family members free as well, no reason for this person to be feared but it is distressing just that this person is even allowed to live let alone be free. Are you allowed to protect yourself at all in Australia? Like a rifle or shotgun even?
