I'm having this issue since the first game I played years ago, super mario on NES. Today I still yell, cry and growl when I'm about to die in a game or when I'm struggling (e.g. enemy stuns me). At the moment I really fear turning on my ps4 because I know I'm gonna lose again and that my mother is gonna get mad at me. What can I do to cope with these meltdowns?

When I catch myself getting angry early enough, I have a trick where I can quickly turn it from anger into a force of motivation to try again even harder. I am not sure if I can teach this trick, but I guess I kind of focus on imagining that anger turning into a wave that bombards the enemy, the frustrating homework, whatever, again and again. The feeling of the anger leaving me and hitting the enemy keeps it from building up in me and exploding, I guess.

Sounds like frustration to me. I'm really bad at dealing with frustration, it's worse than almost anything for me. If I'm extremely frustrated with something and it's not something that I really need to do, I just don't do it. Why not try something other than video games? Or maybe try different ones? Granted, I'm far from an expert on games; my experience with them since about 1983 has been limited to buying them for my kids, but back in the day I used to go to the game room every night because that's what we did back then, and I'd try different ones until I found something I could actually play, what with my wonderful hand eye coordination and all lol. I liked a couple of them but I can't remember which ones other than Frogger and that one spider web looking one. But, my point was to try something different. Maybe a different game or even a different hobby altogether. What about something like a craft, or something physical like a sport or exercise, or even try learning painting or skating or something if you can do that?

I know games are the thing to do now, and almost everybody I know under 30 plays them all the time, but I bet there are lots of other things probably online that you could do.

I used to get really sad and distraught when I would die. I still don't like it much.

But I once played with someone who it didn't bother at all. In fact he would frequently jump off cliffs or something just for fun. So I decided to start doing that. From time to time I will do something crazy just to get my character killed off. Now I am more accustomed to my character croaking and it doesn't bother me nearly as much.

A fancy term might be something like "systematic desensitization", but whatever. Good luck! :D

I used to rage really badly at video games, and I've thrown controllers, broke part of the plastic on one of my keyboards, yelled at my computer, and I once even punched a hole in the wall in triumph because I managed to snipe someone on TF2 (odd, I know.)

Nowadays, I don't take games as seriously, but I don't play them nearly as often either. Usually, if I'm getting frustrated with a game, I'll just stop playing and do something else. That said, I can be kind of masochistic at times, and sometimes I'll actually get into and enjoy a game that's frustrating the hell out of me, in an odd sort of way.

Speaking of which, I should load up my save file on Hotline Miami again... or maybe not, my landlord is trying to sleep. :P

You mentioned something about a game that looked like a spider web... are you perhaps referring to Black Widow by Atari? I used to play that on my PS2, on Atari Anthology. Very underrated game. :)

Well why does it cause you so much frustration?...I could see why your mom might be bothered since it probably looks like you're spending a lot of time on something that just upsets you which would concern any parent. Perhaps attempting to get to the bottom of why it bothers you so much would help you figure out how to address it. I mean do you get upset instantly the first time you get close to dying or is it after you've been playing for a while you start getting frusterated? If it is the latter I would recommend taking a break and going back to it later...that is what I do since to me that is a sign I've probably played long enough for the time being.

If you cannot cope with dying/losing at all though then I am not entirely sure what you could do.

No. The only thing I ever played on Atari was Space Invaders and Pac Man and Frogger. The game I'm talking about was at the game room, one of the old, big games. It's on the tip of my tongue but I can't remember it. These shapes like webs would be a level and you would go around the edges of it and shoot at things coming out of the center. When you killed all the things then you went to a next level with a different shape. I think it started with an M, but I'm not sure. I'd know it if I saw it. I actually remember it the other day because I was telling one of the kids about it.

That sounds like Tempest, another favorite of mine. :D
