Helping mentally ill student?
I'm 16, and there's a kid in my alternative school on the side with low-functioning autistic students (even though he isn't low-functioning autistic) and he has trouble speaking and is violent and has some other mental problems but he claims he's studying for SAT and he was in regular classes with my class last year, so it's not that he's low-functioning.... He sometimes tries talking to my two classmates, Alex and Elazar (who are both 18) but they usually ignore him.... Alex even talked bad about him one time, and today, he was trying to tell them that he stayed up until 6 am, and i could see they were trying to get rid of him, and I didn't want him to get violent, so i tried telling him (the mentally ill student) that they were busy talking to each other and he should talk to me, but he wouldn't stop... eventually, they summoned one of his teachers, and the teacher took him away... I don't want his feelings getting hurt, and I also don't want him to get violent and lash out at one of the low-functioning kids who can't fight back (cause that's what he does, usually)... what should I do? My paraprofessional suggested that i tell him that alex and elazar are bad people and aren't nice and he shouldn't talk to them, but im not sure if that would work...
It doesn't seem like Alex and the other kid wanted to talk to your friend. I don't think you should tell him (your friend) that the are "bad people." You should tell him, instead, that they feel like talking to each other at that moment.
Maybe you could guide your friend towards a good book to read, instead.
